Thanks Jeff for the info. Is there a preferred sequence as far as which kit one should work on? I will probably start with the rudder kit like many others but where should I go from there?

For the XL it was suggested to me to do rudder, horiz. stab, elevator, flaps, ailerons, wings, and fuselage.
Read ahead, study the plans and don't be afraid to ask for advice. The kit is well designed but there is still plenty of opportunity to screw up. Careful planning reduces the amount of scrap aluminum you'll produce.

Darrell,
My sequence was rudder, stabilizer/elevator, wings (along with nav/strobes & landing/taxi lights and controls), fuselage, dual sticks, canopy and landing gear. I rigged the aileron cables before I closed my wings. Canopy and main landing gear get in the way of other stuff if done too early. The nose gear can be completed after the fuselage is nearly complete, but before the engine mount is installed. You can't really complete the canopy until your engine mount is bolted into place, your completed instrument panel and the forward top skin are finally riveted in place. This is probably an over-simplification, but you will begin to get the picture as you proceed.

Did my wings before the flaps and slats because I read that you needed to
make sure that the brackets on the flaps and slats fitted the wing.

Darrell,
I believe that in the end, it really doesn't matter. My 601 HD Manual starts on the wings. Later portions of the manual expect that you have the skills learned building them. I started with the rudder, then went on to build the stabilizer, and then the elevator finishing the tail. I left the electrical work until now just putting in conduits for the wires as I built the airframe. I also built from kits to pay as I went along. I was lucky that Zenith is one of the two kit manufacturers still in business since 1994 (Van's is the other). Other kit manufacturers I thought about are long gone (Pulsar & Team). I also watched the ads and bought another builder's untouched wing kit saving me money and returning some to the other builder. Some prefer to do the fuselage first for encouragement reasons. You get to sit in it earlier, but eventually you need all the parts to fly!

Your sequence really does not matter. This thing will not fly until it aaaaaaaaaalllll is done. I have been three months from finishing for three years. I was thinking I was three weeks from taxi tests last week. A very experienced new friend of mine told me I was still three months away. That was after I had a breakthrough weekend thanks to his help. I hate to admit it but; I think he is right.
Make a plan that works for you. Modify it as is needed. Try to do something on the project every day. Remember that someday you will fly this thing. It sure is looking better today; but only because I did something yesterday! I did not get as much done today as I had planned; but I got a lot done. I have plans for tomorrow as well. I have passed the point that quiting is not an option. I WILL FLY THIS THING SOMEDAY.

A good friend of mine, also a airplane builder, answer this when asked how long it will take to build, etc.

If you're looking for a sequence that will give you the most hands-on skill in the shortest time, start with the stab.

I'm doing it in the following order, which spreads out the cost:
Rudder Kit (at Rudder Workshop) - Done.
Elevator/Stab Kit - Done.
Engine - Looking for a rebuildable core.
Wings/Fuel Kit - In progress.
Fuselage - not there yet...
Gear/Controls/Canopy - not there yet...
Regarding the engine, I'm going with the Corvair. A couple of people have told me that it's best to start on that early, as sometimes there are long lead times for parts.
