I think your guess is quite correct, Lowell. A few years ago, I read in 

a Norwegian aviation magazine that a EuroCub MkI (taildragger similar 

to the Kitfox) pilot changed his 8" wide tyres for 6" wide and got no 

more than a couple of knots faster.
