Hello Listers,

has anybody heard of a 601 HD with a Rotax 914? I have a secondhand 914
sitting in my workshop that needs an airframe and am now tossing up ideas
for Zodiac number six. My first HD taildragger had a 912 and climbed at
1300 fpm, absolutely loved that. I am aware that even with the 914 the
plane will not go much faster than 100 knots but it should climb like a
dingbat! Some of my fondest memories of my first 601 was holding her in
groundeffect after take off, clocking up 85 knots and then zooming up at
2000 fpm...
So if anybody knows wether this combination has been built and maybe what
performance it had I would be much obliged!

Greeting from downunder,

Chris from Perth

Hi Chris,

I have a couple of uninformed comments to your question about a Rotax
914 and Zodiac HD.

First, I wonder why you would prefer the HD to the newer and higher
performing XL. Since it is newer, the support for the XL should be a
little better too.

Second, I wonder if the designer's limits for engine horsepower are
exceeded by the 914. This can be a very dangerous situation. I
don't know the exact fatal scenarios, but I think they involve
applications of full power while flying slow and with nose high
attitude. This can lead to instant spins if the rudder is not
sufficiently large to counteract the torque. I would certainly
recommend you seek designer approval of such a large engine on any Zodiac.

Good luck,

Paul

If you already have the 914 onhand, take a look at the Titan T-51 kit. The 914 makes it perform reasonably well and its looks are extraordinary.
