I will soon be putting a 912S in my Zenith 701. I am wondering what is the best strategy for buying a new engine? Can you get discounts from suppliers? Are there show specials at Airventure? Who has the best prices for a new engine?

George,
I don't know if this is actually still the case or not, but, the owner of a rotax shop in South Mississippi told me in 2004 at Sun And Fun that Zenith was selling 912's cheaper than he could. The president of Zenith in Mexico, MO (not CH) told me that they basically sold the engine for what it cost them to buy it. I'm sure there is some markup involved, but you can probably check it out online by price comparisons....

George--
Rotax are pretty much fair traded with very little discounting on new
engines.
At least that is what I found when I bought mine in late 2004. The South
Mississippi
dealer was probably the best price(saved maybe 4-500 dollars) but they
wanted full payment up front. Since most all have the same price, the next
thing
I looked for was service and support. I ended up purchasing from Lockwood.
They have been responsive and helpful with questionsI've had.
Just another opinion

Saw your post and thought you might want to email the guy I just bought my 914F from. He’s got 40+ years in aviation engines and just retired. Up until recently his company has been doing work on unmanned planes for the dept. of defense and when he closed down, he had several new and nearly new 912S's and a couple of 914F's engines for sale.
Anyway, you’re welcome to send him an email and see if he has any left. He had some guys that wanted to buy the entire lot, but hopefully he’s got one laying around somewhere! By the way, I found him to be extremely trustworthy and really knowledgeable.
I'm not sure he wants his email posted where bots can pick it up, so if you're interested, reply back to me here and let me know what your email is, and I'll send it directly to you.
Happy building and safe flying,
Dan
