Maybe Kolb should go in the go-cart business too?
Did you notice the extra corner gussets on the elevators and rudder? I figured i would build mine in instead of adding them later like you had to do.

Hi Scott:
Glad you picked up on the corner gussets. Don't forget the rudder
too.
Has Kolb incorporated them into the plans? I think not, but have not
seen the new mkIIIx plans.

We put gussets on the rudder as well. I just didn't post a seperate picture of them.
And no. There are no corner gussets on the plans. I noticed them on your plane (at) Sun-n-Fun last year but never got around to asking you about them. Looking at the design it made sense that the single rivet would see a lot of rotational stress so we just went ahead and added them. In the attached pic you can see the corner gussets as well as the slight changes to the cross bracing to help transmit rotational forces to the rudder TE

Just curious, Has anyone ever used welded joints instead of riveting in putting a Kolb together ? Considering that, for example, moutain bikes these days are all welded aluminium frame and they take an increadable beating, that method of construction could probably be applied to a Kolb. Less simplicity of construction of course, which is a downside but perhaps a stronger joint and it definately looks better. Like I say, just curious. Anybody care to comment ?
David.

David,
Most of the aluminum tubing used in the Kolbs is 6061-T6. The T6 means it
is heat treated which would be compromised by welding. It would also take a
heck of a jig to weld it up in to prevent warping. As you stated welding
would really add a lot of time to the project. The strength of the Kolb
structure is very adequate.
Steven
Hope my spelling is ok

Scott,
When did you buy kit 1? Your project and workman ship looks great! I also added the gussets to the rudder and elevator like johns plane. There are some real good mods for the wings as well.

Scott,
One other thing i noticed. Flaps. Does the Mark 3 X come with flaps now or did you add them. If added what are your plans for deploying them i.e. mech or eletric.

Paul,
I purchased Kit 1 At the Kolb homecoming in 2005. Started work on it around 12/1/05. Worked until the end of March on it. I picked up Kit 2 At the Homecoming 2006 and just started working on the plane around Christmas.
Thanks for the compliments. My friend Paul and I both tend to follow some of Burt Rutans wisdom, "your best is ALMOST good enough".
I ordered the Mark III X with the 'Classic' style wing. Kolb will build them either way for you. If you order the flapped wing they mod the cage for you. The flaps and linkage are the same as the Classic.

What is the difference between the Mark III Extra wing and the Classic
wing?

The Xtra wing uses flaperons.
The Classic wing uses seperate flaps and ailerons.

Some xtra' s have flaps. Most of the xtra lights have flaperons and the xtra
heavies have flaps.
