Hello Kolbers,
Back in the beginning of the year there was a thread about off-field landings. I had an experience I believe would be qualified as a contribution to that thread. While flying an under-constructed Chicken Hawk ultralight, the wings folded at 1200' AGL and I survived a fall to earth with no parachute. I tried to post some pictures and a narrative on the photo share, but apparently there's some kind of disconnect between me and the photo share because I was unable to get it done.
I'm sure many of you would be fascinated to read about it so I'm setting up a personal website and posting the pictures and narrative there. If you'd like to check it out click on the link below.

I'd like to wish you all a great 2007. To those in the midwest who are struggling with the ice and snow, my thoughts are with you. Maybe you're getting your licks early in the year and will coast for the remainder.
Regards,

Hi Folks. Kind of a Post Script to my message from yesterday, I've got to tell you I was shocked. Reading the list almost daily, I've had the impression there were 30 or so people who regularly read it, but with over 200 responses to my post....!!! It appears there are many out there in Cyberland who just listen.
I also wanted to mention one other thing. Some of us are a little shy about discussing death with the deathee. When I was discharged from the hospital I arrived home to some messages on my answering machine; one from a reporter from the local paper. He called to request an interview, and even HE gave me an out; if I didn't want to discuss the accident... a private matter, etc.
Let me assure you, there is no need to be timid. I'm happy and still amazed to be alive, and the incident has brought about some significant changes in my life. I relaxed (on suggestion) before I hit the ground and as a result, all my injuries were only the parts of me that hit the ground - no broken neck, back, etc. from a rigid body. So, the indescribable loneliness which I wrote about in my account that I experienced while falling is sort of the antitheses of the joy of sharing my gratitude to God for His intervention with so many warm, caring people.
I did decline an interview with the National Enquirer, for obvious reasons, but B. J. Phillips did a very tasteful write-up in the Philadelphia Inquirer. The article also ran in other newspapers in the syndicate, and I had an exchange with a fighter pilot in Viet Nam who told me he could relate because there were moments he believed his death was imminent. He's was, at the time, a Washington lobbiest and he sent me a memento sweatshirt from his organization. Many neat stories, but they'll have to be skipped.
Regards,
Dave Kulp
