|

I am confused about the number of hat stiffeners specified in the
main spar according to the latest 601XL drawings.
In item 1, on the top view of the wing spar web four hat stiffeners
are shown, on both the from view of the web and the whole spar only
3 hat stiffeners are shown. Also the description for the hat
stiffeners in item 8 lists 4 short ones and TWO long ones. So how
many hat stiffeners does the spar need to have? The rules say:
when in doubt follow the drawings, but the drawings don't seem to
be consistent here. I am scratch building the wings so I don't have
a pre-fab spar delivered, is there a kit builder who remembers his
spars ?

Maarten,
You need four (two short-two long) hat stiffeners for each spar

Maarten,
I don't remember, but I have extensive photos taken during construction. I have looked at the photos of both wings and I don't see the last (outboard) hat channel, the one that is shown on the plan view of the spar web. I can see three others, two short inboard ones and one long one at about mid span, as shown on the "front View.". Hope this helps.

Maarten,
You may need four, but as I said in my previous post, the kit-supplied spars only have three.

Page 6-K-0 of the plans shows the dimensions and spar layout for the standard tanks. There are 2 long and 2 short hat stiffeners specified in the plans for the standard tanks. Page 6-W-3 shows the spar configuration for the long range tanks which specifies 2 short and 1 long stiffeners. Note that the location of LNRA#4 is different for the standard tanks. I think ZAC should have put the drawings for the standard tanks on 6-W-3 and the optional long range tanks on page 6-K-0. That seems to be more logical, to me.

Thanks Dave, Jay, Paul,
Yes, I should have compared the 6W3 drawing with the 6K0
drawing, that shows where the confusion started.
I agree that Zenith probably even managed to confuse themselves
with the standard and long range options. I am planning to go
with the 15 gallon (long range) tanks. This almost seems to be
the standard option (unless you want to save money), Zenith
seems to be half-way converting to this, as evident from the
mixed up drawings.
Regards,
Maarten

hi all
When I got the kit I also ordered the long range tanks. When my spars were unwrapped they had the extra hat stiffner as per the Std fuel tanks.
I spoke to Zenith and they said to just cut the extra one off.
Chris.

Chris - I'm sure Zenith told you to cut off the extra "L" not a hat stiffener. 15 gallon tanks take up more room in the leading edge so nose rib # 4 is mounted further outboard. I had the same question as to what to do about removing it and they said cutting it off was better than drilling out the rivets holding it on. It gives the spar a little extra strength. The hat stiffeners in question are something else entirely, and my factory built spar has only three. The outboard one shown on the drawing is absent.

Chris,
That's strange. My spars (for long range tanks) came without the "extra" hat channel, but they did have an extra vertical angle (for nose ribs) that had to be cut off.

I called Zenith about this as I was making my spars. I have the 15 gal tanks and 4 hat sections per the 6K0 plans. I just makes sense to have the added strength and Zenith agreed.
