Is anybody going to the fly-in this Saturday? I've got my plane
ready, and maybe I need somebody to tell me I'm nuts to go. Barring
that, weather willing, creek doesn't rise, I'm gonna give it a shot.
I've got about 15 takeoffs and landings since I installed the skis,
and all is well landing on mostly grass with about 3 inches of snow
around here. Biggest detriment that I can see so far is the weather.
Any tips out there for a beginning (by air) Oshkosher?
I just finished installing a redundant set of safety cables/shock
cords, and feel like I can just about slice through anything. : )

When parking in un-packed snow it is sometimes a good idea to taxi the plane
in a circle and stop in your own tracks the second time around. Helps to
keep the skis from sticking to the snow.

An old bush pilot told me that one...

He also said when it really got cold he would drain the oil and bring it
inside and also bring in the battery. Oh yes.. And in very cold weather lay
some boughs on the ground and run the plane up on them also helps to keep
the skis from sticking to the snow.

Have fun!!

Go wide around Chicago....Plan fuel stops well...you'll need the snow

I've done Oshkosh a few times from New Hudson Mi in the Fall Long trip, (85 MPH) and you need to know where you are at when rounding the lake and heading east. I always went past Mode C airspace before starting North, but that was an equipment issue. more relaxing though This was before common GPS

I just got the VFR Terminal Area chart, and it shows the popular
route along the lake, which looks doable to me...a little up and down
here and there to stay out of "B" space, but seems doable. Of course
the chart doesn't show all those planes zooming by either. : )
I've done the Oshkosh drive 6 or 7 times, and it's gonna be fun
(weather permitting) to look down and see those damned orange cones
from another view.
I'm planning to mark the chart, but keep an eye on the GPS as
well...or vice versa, probably.
With 26 gallons aboard, and less than 4 gph, I *shouldn't* have to
stop for fuel, but certainly will for nature calls, and will refuel
then, I'll mark the best-looking spots on the chart.
Thanks, Steve.

Thanks Noel...sounds like some of the stories I read last year about
the Alaskan bush pilots.
NOW I know what to do with my still-to-be-taken-down Christmas tree!
I understand that tossing the boughs out can give you a better
perspective on landing.

Re sticking to the snow....I've got wheel-penetration skis, so with
packed snow, this shouldn't be an issue, should it? Also the
polyurethane "feet" should help that situation, I would think...we
shall see...

I used to carry two short pieces of 2X4 and would lift up the skis and put
them under the skis to keep them from freezing down.

from my snowmobile days, we did have problems with ski's sticking in the snow, then came the plastic ski's, wow now we were spoiled pups, slide and no stick in the snow, no build up of snow on the ski's either. hope this helps.

I spoke with O'kosh today, and the wind was blowing the snow around,
but they are still a go for tomorrow, as am I.
Yeah, thank God for plastic...I'm a "newbie" on skis, and I'm already
spoiled.

Lynn, --------------------- Good luck on your trip. ----------------
I love Ski fly ins.

Also if you do not have a metal runner on bottom of ski you will not get
much sticking.
One thing I would suggest is to lift up each ski and put a stick under each
ski to be sure.
One thing i Usually do prior to getting in the plane is grab the strut and
move the plane back and forth a bit to ensure you not stuck. Or grab the
tail handle and move it side to side and watch each ski to make sure they
loose.

Also if landing in deep snow make sure you land and don't stop until you go
in a loop an d come back to the tracks you just made if possbile. If not
you might be looking at tramping down a path to get back out.

Another thing is make sure you not in slush, once you bog down in it you
will have trouble getting moving again. Even though there is 2 feet of ice
but yet 12 inches of slush will be a mess to get out of. And since you on
wheel skis always be ready for a frozen wheel on landing.

Take some sunglasses and different colours if you have them as it hard to
see the surface on gray days.

And don;'t forget to take some pics to remind us what a great time it was.

Fly safe !

Dave

Thanks, Dave...pictures coming right up...stills that is.
The trip hasn't even started yet and I already caught two typos in
the landing procedures that were emailed to me from EAA...not a big
deal, just saying on one hand that you're heading for downwind, and
on the other hand that you're heading for final...like I say, just a
small matter. : ) Oh, yeah, another small matter was the reference
to the Red Barn as a landmark just north of the field....don't look
for it, I was told, as they demolished it two weeks ago....ho hum.

They are expecting maybe 100 planes, and when I called today, with
about 2 hours left in their day, they gave me registration number 53,
so there may not be as many as they think. With 53-100 planes packing
the snow, I gotta think that it'll be bumpy and skatey.
I'm planning to leave there later in the day and heading back the
northern route, and staying someplace in Upper Michigan for the
night, then maybe heading to the Bush Planes Museum in Sault Ste.
Marie, Ontario....maybe. I'm taking my birth certificate in case I do
that. I'd land stateside, and take ground transportation into Canada,
eh? : )

Bon Voyage Lynn. I didn't catch when you were leaving and returning,
but on the way home if you need a place to stay for the night I'm
about 30 air minutes south of Alpena MI. I'm downstate right now and
won't be home until Monday. Let me know.

You might be in trouble flying into Canada. I think you have to have a passport when flying. I think that includes our little ones.

Overnight accomodations also available here Lynn. No landing strip on site, but pick-up & delivery assured from Evart (9C8) 5 miles away.

Bon Voyage Lynn. I didn't catch when you were leaving and returning,
but on the way home if you need a place to stay for the night I'm
about 30 air minutes south of Alpena MI. I'm downstate right now and
won't be home until Monday. Let me know.

Yep, bon voyage, Lynn! I went flying today. A bit of snow here but it
will rain tomorrow. I can't be bothered to put my skis on ...yet.

You are right you might have trouble --- but the trouble will be in getting
back into the USA, as American Customs requires that you have a passport to
enter regardless whether you are an alien or US citizen.

Thanks, Michel...I flew all the way over there for a good snow
landing and could have done almost without the skis...but the trip
was what it was all about, and seeing some other examples of skis.
But with only 4 planes there when I got there, there wasn't much to
choose from. : ) And thanks for the pictures of your skis, as they
helped me to build mine.
