I am planning on flying from Watsonville, CA to Lakeland and could use some advice.

Can anyone recommend a good stop-over around the Lubbock-Midland Texas area?

What accomodiations are typically made for lodging at the event? Camping or car/motel route?

Thanks,

I can’t make much of a recommendation for fuel in TX, but it would be a good idea to tank up in FL before you get to Lakeland. X35 is the perfect place and cheap self-serve fuel.

I don’t know much about the arrangements there. They do have camping just like Oshkosh, which would be a better option, if you are that type of person, than a hotel, because traffic can be a pain in the neck in the mornings and afternoons. They have camping in airplane parking or you can park just in the parking area and go to the campground.

We fly down and rent a car and stay at the Marriott in Orlando, wish we could get into Tampa, much closer, but Lakeland is always full. Never camped but it would be FUN but if you're there a whole week, you might want a rental. I know you can rent cars right at the Lakeland airport. Then again, we rented a car to go and do other stuff during the week, and we did go to NASA and saw the launching pad, etc - OKAY but MUCH MUCH better at the air show and would not do that again. We'd be happy just setting up a chair and watching every plane fly for a whole week!

Not sure about places to stop but you are going to have THE BEST time EVER!!!!! SUN N FUN is the first big show of the season in warm weather and it's SO MUCH FUN!!

As long as the rental car doesn't get burned up in the parking
lot... *grin*
Fortunately I wasn't parked anywhere near that car last year.

I was...the fire came up to the middle of our row and if the fire department or the wind had blown a little harder our row would have been next, it stopped the car on the south side of our row...SnF by not cutting the grass had a lot of the responsibility IMO on this one..they directed the car to the high weedy grass...but it took several hours for the thing to catch fire...we came in at about the same time and the fire got going about 1200...what a mess for the 30 or so cars that got flamed...it was my last day at the show, and when going back to the car I did not know if I was OK or not. If I remember correctly, we were in row 26 and the fire began in 28...ugly!!!

I don't need to stand up for Sun-n-Fun, but if the grass hadn't been mowed, there wouldn't have been a problem. The problem was that they mowed really tall grass just before the fly-in and there was a parking lot full of high 'straw' that burned rather rapidly. Green grass wouldn't have spread so fast. It sure was a mess, though, and I really feel sorry for all those folks that didn't have a ride home. I heard that people had a real hard time figuring out which car was theirs ..... burned out cars seem to look the same, no matter who made it!

Linn, not to take up too much space...there was very high dry grass in that area...Lakeland was very dry last year and while they did cut the area they cut it high, thus they had about the worst situation one can have...high cut dry grass with a layer of cut grass on top of that.

The car where the fire started was a low riding car, Masarati. He was just behind me when we came in, I noted it because it was just like a buddy of mine back in IL many years ago. As they do at SnF, the cars were single file then divided into double rows thus when we divided we were sent into different parking rows...when he got out of the car I took a look back to see if it was my old buddy from IL.  It was not but I noted that the grass by the front of the car was up in his wheel wells and down the sides about half way up the doors. An alarm should have gone off at the time in my head but it did not as I wanted to get to the booths and coffee and it wasn't my buddy from IL! The SnF folks cut the middle of the rows pretty well, but the area by the dividers was very poorly groomed. Bet it's better this year!

Thanks Patrick ..... I didn't see that exact area when I took some handicapped folks to their car, so defer to your on-the-spot analysis. You are right, though, this year they did something different!!! I took my trailer over on Fri to put it on-site and ....... they did a controlled burn on that parking lot!!!! Right now there isn't a speck of green anywhere ..... brown where it didn't burn and black where it did.
