Greetings all,
It was interesting that there was a discussion on flotation and the various ways to get an airplane to float.  Since I live in a Northern county of Wisconsin that has the highest concentration of fresh water lakes in the world, (the rest is trees and more trees) the idea is appealing to me as well.  I received a box in the mail that was cushioned with small air pillows and that is what got me to thinking about how they could be used for flotation.  These pillows are constructed from two mill plastic and sealed on three sides by a machine that airs them up and seals them.  The pillows are 7 X 11 and fit very easily through the lightening holes in the leading edge and spar of a 701.  They also will fit through the inspection holes that I have included in each bay of the wing.  The first thing I did was to determine how much they would support.  I taped a five pound scuba weight to the bag and it was slightly better than neutral buoyancy.   It appeared that I could easily get 70 to 80 bags in each wing which would supply adequate flotation.
If anyone is interested in seeing the product and how it is made, go to:  www.sealedair.com   The trick will be to find a retailer that ships with these bags that will be willing to sell just the air filled bags.  I would also think they would be inexpensive.
Down side to the bags in the wings, is they will have to be removed every annual to properly inspect wing interiors.
Next trick would be to fill them with helium!  That would definitely be a short field 701!
