Fellow Europaphiles,

A couple of weeks ago I said I was hoping to score a trip by Europa to Longreach in Western Queensland to see the landing of QANTAS's first jet aircraft.

Well the trip came off but the aircraft wasn't allowed to land . . . the crew need more training! . . . . . yes we have them here too (a delightful bureaucracy by the name of CASA)

Not to be put down, the aircraft was flown up from Sydney and did two low passes and four approaches and go-arounds before returning to Sydney. It is now to return for its final landing at the end of June and will join its big brother, a B747-200 already on show near the QANTAS Founders Museum.

My mates little 912 tri-gear took us for the 650 nm round trip in fine style never missing a beat and burning no oil. I might say I was quite pleased it didn't miss a beat too because we flew over heaps of very inhospitable country for 25% of the way. Avg fuel burn was 13.9 LPH and avg speed just over 100 kts.

Have attached a few photos for anyone who might be interested.

Pommies - again please note the weather in all photos. This is what I expect in June when I'm in the UK.

Regards to all

Kingsley in Oz

Hi Kingsley

What great pictures. The trip sounds fantastic, I’m sure you enjoyed it a lot. Not sure you will get the same weather in U.K. but June is a fairly safe bet for reasonable conditions. I am still in Florida until the end of April and am presently preparing my aircraft for Sun n Fun. Hopefully the fuel leak is now fixed (fingers crossed) and I can get back in the air. What are your U.K. plans, as it would be great to arrange a meet up somewhere if possible?
Hope you are well.
Kind Regards

Alan

Hi Kingsley

Nice pictures! What was the registration of the 707?

In the UK they just scrapped the last remaining BOAC 707-400 (that was the on with the RR engines)

Pete

PS When you do your run ups at Kemble you park your Europa in front of two 747-200s. Unfortunately they are in the breakers yard.

Apropos QANTAS (there...I got the spelling right Kingsley!) B707s,
there was an online article a few days ago on either Slate or
Huffingtonpost about John Travolta's Q/B707 parked in his front yard
somewhere in Florida...pretty big personal toy...

Sorry you weren't able to witness the 707's full stop landing...thanks
for the pix of the fly by and low pass!

Fred

One of the tapes they show on the History Channel every now and again is one of the maiden flights of the 707. Boeing was having a celebration and the aircraft overflew it as part of the party. Immediately after passing over at low altitude, the pilot aileron rolled it. THAT is s sight.

That Boeing is sitting at the Air & Space Museum at Dulles, along with lots of other nice aircraft. Was in the DC area over Christmas and spent the day strolling thru aviation history.

Well worth the trip if you in the DC area.

Jim...a quick google at "Boeing Dash 80 aileron roll" will get a
rundown of this story...I believe over 300,000 people had lined the
banks of Lake Washington for the unlimited hydroplane races...they sure
got a special treat!
