Hi,
I've searched this forum to see if I can find the answer but I can't.

So, can anyone tell me why on the 62" Warp Drive ground adjustable propeller, tapered blades are recommended for a Rotax 912 and broad blades are recommended for a 912S and 914?

What is the issue with running a tapered blade on a 912S or a broad blade on a 912?

Yours,

Phil
it's the power absorption. The tapered blade matches the power output of
the 912, so allows the engine to develop enough rpm for the power needed
for take oiff and climb..
912S & 914 need more blade area to absorb the power. Tapered blades will
over rev too easily. Tapering a broad blade is maybe the cheap way to do
it, they can use the same mould for either then cut to suit. My guess
anyway.

Your guess is correct, Graham. I visited the Warp Drive stand at S n F last
year and they confirmed they have only one mould for all blades.

William

It's amazing that these props work at all at the speeds we fly, they
were designed and developed on Microlights.

Thats just it Graham, they DON'T work at all speeds we fly, only the lower speeds.
I gained 20 mph on the top end and lost no climb from the WD by going to a custom designed
fixed pitch prop.

Hey Jeff - I am using a Catto fixed pitch 3 blade, 64 x 62 on my 125 hp EA81 powered
mono. Here is an 8 page Vans Air Force forum thread that is discussing the Catto vs other
fixed pitch AND constant speed units. The general consensus is that the Catto fixed
pitch is just as good on the RV as a Hartzell C/S unit and 20 lbs lighter for thousands less.
I'm sure Craig would build a 912 or 914 optimized prop if a few people got interested.

http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=12964&page=1&pp=10

There is a new design by Paul Lipps that Catto is also producing, pic below. This
should be the direction of future prop design. An article by Paul Lipps on his prop
design is here:
http://www.batterson.net/EAA499/Issue77_8-13.pdf

This ones pricey for a fixed pitch because of the laminar flow prop airfoil is much
harder to carve at $3200 US. Plan on a long wait - up to a year.
I am ordering a Lipps design prop. I hope to use the exact same profile as Lipps
uses on his 0-235 powered Lancair as hp and prop rpm are the same.

Now isn't that a coincidence! Craig also makes one of the favourite EZ
propellers, (3 blade). The other EZ favourite is Gary Hertzler's 2 blade
"Silver Bullet" AFAIK both these guys use computer optimisation.
BTW waiting list for either is quite long. Market opportunity for
someone. Wish I was a bit younger!

Fred,

It's my twisted mind - gets worse as I get older. What amused me is how a 'thread' is subtly changed with each email.

Graham wrote -
" It's amazing that these props work at all at the speeds we fly, they were designed and developed on Microlights. "
(---that these props work at all ------- AT the speeds we fly.)
Glenn replied -
" Thats just it Graham, they DON'T work at all speeds we fly.....".

I'm sorry, I blame my english teacher with the 'supersonic' board rubber (eraser in american).

regards,

Mike

Regarding Craig Catto's props, in my email exchanges with him, Craig
has been very leery of the Rotax hub due to the forces his 3 bladed
wood props generate; he much prefers, at a minimum, a SAE 1 hub/bolt
circle for adequate bearing.

Regarding Craig Catto's comments re: Rotax hub circle...
After reading Paul Lipps' short article it appears to me that the lack of racking and twisting and the reduced mass at the tips might go a long way toward minimizing the loads at the hub which give Craig the fantoids.
