Does the 2 roller hole flanger sold by ACS work well? Or what is
the best way to flange lightening holes? Thanks, Jerry

I saw a hole flanger on the US Industrial Tool Co. print ad in Trade A Plane. It looked like a metal arm with two rollers. How in the world do you use it?

Bob, I bought one of those tools.
It consists of two wheels with bearings exactly the type you see in shower doors - not exactly heavy duty - attached to a handle.
I replaced the two wheels with regular bearings I bought locally.
The result depends a lot on the hability and patience of the tool operator.
Some people love it.
Myself, well, not so much. I think the best way is to use dies.
There must be a lot of posting on this subject in the archives.
Good luck

I have one, and I don’t know how it works. The little I’ve tried to use it, it didn’t seem to work for me, but I may be doing something wrong.

My preferred tool is one you can make in a minute or two with a
piece of plywood and a bandsaw. You cut a slot about 1/2" deep and
about 1/2" from the end of the stick. You then cut the circle in the
sheet metal and use the stick to bend the flange by going around the
circle a few times until you are happy with the bends.
I know this is low tech, but it works better than any of the methods
I have tried.

Hello Jerry,
I used used artificial deck wood flange press blocks made
on my drill press and with the support of a press like
Dave's based on an $9 car jack the results look really
good. After a lot of preparation making the three different
sizes and the press flanging a hole now really goes
quickly

Beats me. I bought one and I hate it. I obviously have no idea how the damned thing is supposed to be used.

I used home made flanging dies for the holes, but I did use the "hole
flanger" mentioned below for some other stuff....seemed to work much better
with plenty of oil or WD40 on the part.

Ed, I used one similar once and it made wavy bends because the pressure can not be maintained constant. I purchased another design that is two large rollers welded to a set of vise grips that works very well. Paid about $40. for it. Hope your building is going well. I flew last week and did five touch and go's in about 30 minutes. The Jab 3300 really pulls hard. When tanks got about half full she climbed at 1300 fpm. Best regards, Bill of Georgia

Bob-
Depends on the geometry of the wheels, but stick the Al between them with the handle perpendicular to the hole. Pull the flange down to a rough shape every 1/2" or so. Then, switch sides, add some angle to the tool, and run it around the hole a couple of times with light down pressure.
Works acceptably well for flange holes, but you'll find more uses for the tool for other stuff.
