Hey all, I'm looking at building a hangar/condo/gameroom combination on an airstrip. Anyone know of a firm that specializes in this?

Thanks in advance.

Not yet..still in Afghanistan. I will be here through the end of the year. I had bought some land on an airpark and wanted to get the ball rolling for when I return..maybe have it at least designed and approved for constuction.

Here in the backwaters of the country (Mississippi) we just ask the
chickens if we (and our planes) can move in with them.

The best deal on structure is a chicken house (or other clear-span farm
building). What it looks like finished is up to you (and your
contractor, if you're flush with money). One of my neighbors lives in an
hangar/apartment that looks like a museum: beautiful rough-sawn cypress
siding, beaded cypress paneling in the apartment, with a '29 TravelAir
in the hangar & all sorts of early aviation memorabilia both in the
hangar and the apartment. Done right, there is no evidence of the
structure's humble origins.

Unfortunately, if add the word 'airpark' to your address along with City
Codes, Homeowner Associations, etc., creativity can get stifled pretty
quickly.

Twin Hawks. AZ63. It's a small airpark with a dirt strip that is Northwest of Tucson, Arizona. I just bought six acres there..should be a fun project..bigger than any RV project I've been involved in I'm sure.

Paul, Glenn here in Tucson. I would contact Gary Schneider out at Ryan, he and his partner have built all the hangars out there, including mine. His work cell is 520-954-7667. Tell him I sent you. Be careful over there, you still flying OH-58's? I miss them....

Geez, Paul, if you have an architect and he doesn't have any ideas and doesn't know a contractor, than maybe what you really have is a just draftsman (a high dollar one at that).

Morton Buildings specializes in buildings like that. They’ve built most of the private hangars around here, and everyone seems satisfied with them. Good price and lifetime warranty

I wanted to see some plans, some pictures, etc, so I can communicate what I like to my architect with pictures and other ideas. I'm soley using him for designing the building to my needs. But, I'd like a good starting point, and it doesn't seem that there are hangar/home type plans out there like there are home plans.

I plan on finding a contractor myself, as my architect is on the other side of the country.

Paul,
I created my own plans for my two story "pilot lounge" layout, based on thoughts I accumulated over time on what I wanted for it to be used for. It will basically be like a wood framed apartment within the steel hangar structure. Not really hard to do, so I don't see why you would need an architect for it? Good Luck to you.

At the risk of beating a dead horse, the latest bound copy of the Living
With Your PLane directory I have, which is several years old, has 30 floor
plans in it. Many of them come with designer and / or builder info. There
is a separate section with designer / builder ads. Then there is a fairly
comprehensive listing of the airparks across the nation, as well as their
details. The whole publication is now online (vs printed) at
http://www.livingwithyourplane.com/ . As my particular industry has tanked
I'm no longer a member or actively looking at airport homes, but I would
strongly recommend this pub as a resource for anyone who is.

I just subscribed to it, and I must say I was dissapointed. The "floorplans" are nothing but sketches of some peoples home's that have been submitted. Not very much to go on as far as a library of plans you can actually use. I don't know if the bound version is any better, but the online version is not worth the money.
