Gang,
My ego has written a check my sorry butt can't cash. I am supposed to
relocate a Yak 55 from Fla. to Ala. in a couple weeks and don't know much
about them. Flown Yak 12, 50 & 52. 190 liters/50 gallons gas sound right?
Oil capacity? Start procedure standard Yak 50/52 or something else? I see a
switch placarded "Ignition" on the left side of panel, I understand this is
a manual air valve/switch and activates the "shower of sparks"? It is a 1992
model, so still start with mags off? For that matter how can one visually
identify the "switch off to start" mags vs the "switch on to start" Mags?
Any other educational tid bits would be very welcome. Thanx!!

Dean,
I can't tell you a lot about the 55, but I can tell you about the magnetos.
The non-centrifugal advance mags found on most of the 52's with M14P's are
labeled M9F. The "F" looks like a Greek Theta. The centrifugal advance
mags found on the M14PF - 400HP engines are labeled "M9-35". The -35 mags
are started with the mag switch on "1+2". Identify them by the
identification tag on the cover plate just above the P lead connector.

Hi Dean,
My procedure for the 55 is as follows:
1) Intake drains (if present) OPEN, Mags OFF, Battery OFF, Ignition
(="shower of sparks") OFF (That is the small switch on the panel lower
left, under the mags and starter button)
2) Pull prop through 12 blades
3) Prime about 4-6 shots depending on temp (warmer = less)
4) Pull prop through 12 blades
5) Intakes Drains (if present) OPEN, drain, then CLOSED
6) Prime 3-5 shots
7) Cycle throttle 3-4 times, set to about 25%
Battery ON
9) Ignition ON
10) Hit START button, as prop moves, Mags to ON
11) Adjust throttle to about 28-35% rpm, check oil pressure, Generator
(and all other switches on R-hand panel) ON
Works like a charm. The "shower of sparks" has TWO switches: one is the
"Ignition" switch and the other is a microswitch on the manual start
valve (behind the panel on the far left). Both must be closed for the
shower of sparks to operate.
Hope this helps.

And being a relatively new 55 owner, my one tidbit to tell you is that if the engine doesn't start in 1 or 2 blades, stop what you are doing. It either needs more prime or more blades.
I also throw 1 shot of prime into system while priming the cylinders
I tell you the first tidbit because I emptied my air tank the first two times I tried to fly and had to get a refill in order to start. It should take you only about 250 psi to start, unless you aren't quick enough getting the mags flipped on and advancing the throttle and adding prime as necessary to start it.
So, basically practice your 1 armed paper hanger skills!

Scott's starting procedure is right on the money. Steps #6 and #7 is the things most people do not do which results in the engine not starting. I believe if you follow Scott's procedure and hit the START button, the engine will start on the 1st or 2nd blade every time. But if one forgets to crack the throttle open about 25% as Scott says, you may end up emptying your air tank.
Whenever I am involved with a new Yak owner, one of the first things I try to teach them is the starting procedure that works every time. It's the same procedure Scott has so generously posted to the List.

Sarah is absolutely correct. I also neglected to add the final step, 12)
Ignition switch to OFF (which is the CENTER position).

Thanks for the input on starting. Sounds like standard Yak procedure, except
IGN switch is located near the mag switch rather than in the switch cluster,
Shower of Sparks activated by start button. Still wondering if anyone knows
how much gas/oil the thing carries, and any oddities with the fuel/oil
system I should know about? Thanx!!

You should keep 11-12 Liters of oil for cross country and plan on burning a liter an hour in cruise settings. You will burn a liter every 20-30 min when doing acro.
It holds 90 liters a side or about 180 min worth of fuel in cruise. I plan on no longer than 2.5 hours before fuel stop at about 75% -80% cruise setting.
It is 48 gal usuable for english conversion.
