Of course, you could be a lot more creative if the US was like a lot of other countries and used all letters instead of numbers. For example:
G-SPIT (British-registered Spitfire)
G-FAST (some sort of jet)
And a favorite I remember seeing
G-NADS
Try to get the FAA to go along with that one!
Notice that the airlines do buy up blocks of numbers so they can have N-numbers like:
N987AA (American Airlines)
N342NW (Northwest)
N404PA (Pan Am, rip)
