I owned a hand punch back in the late 60's called a Whitney Punch. This was recommended by the designer of my Thorp T-18 project because it quietly, made perfectly round holes, not triangles like a hand drill does. It used interchangeable dies. Thorp had a source for a special No. 30 punch die. I was able to go down a row of holes like Pac Man and still look good. Similar hand punches are still commonly available, but not the No.30 die. They all start at 1/8" then 5/32" and so on. I'm getting one and will use the 1/8" punch and plan to hog out the holes with a No.30 drill bit. But that not as elegant as the No.30 die. Any body know of a 21st century source for the No.30. Getting to a lathe to roll my own is a hassle.

Failing finding the die , a #30 reamer might be the way to go. John

You mean a Roper-Whitney punch? Spruce (among others) sells them: p/n 12-01600. Harbor Freight sells a cheap copy as I recall.

Sorry, I didn't read your post all the way through. Glad someone else provided a source for the #30 punch.
