Brian,

Any update on the results? I'm looking at a cruise speed now of 112K true at 2750 and 8500'. Less than your 133K test, but I should still get a little boost. That gives me about a 4.8 gph fuel burn. Those numbers make the record run in one day in daylight iffy. I need a little better performance. Nick is working on a wood prop, which everybody says is more efficient than my ground adjustable. It's also about 2 - 3 lbs lighter, and I need that too. I have got the weight under control. I started a weight reduction program last year when I started the Lightning build program, and I've lost 18 lbs. Otherwise, I wouldn't even be close to the 500 Kg limit. And we've taken out everything we can think of out of the airplane. Now if we can just get a break in the weather.

I plan to visit Shelbyville next week and hope the prop will be available. Where is your supply of the duralar strips? Can I buy some of that material from you? I need a supply but haven't a clue where to find it.

Other than that, I'm getting close to ready. I have two friends who will be at the first three fuel stops to manage thing and keep the ground time down to 15 min. Weather permitting, we plan to practice a stop this Saturday to confirm fuel and airspeed numbers over a 300 NM leg, and do a dry run on the procedures.

Earl

Hey Earl,
Long time we no get drunk together. Seriously though, have you fitted gear leg fairings and wheel pants. Your speed numbers sound like you have not. Is weight what has kept you from putting them on. Your speed will go up tremendously if you do install the Lightning style fairings

Earl,
I'm waiting on Nick to give me a sheet with a good airspeed calibration
so that I can do all the math and get it to work out just right. (Nick if
you're reading, I need that and the pitot static sheet ASAP) I think that
you're going to find a slightly less fuel burn after though b/c of a better
climb rate to an altitude that will be better for fuel. The strips are in
Nick's office. They are the property of Buz if you want to ask him for
some. You can find them in different sizes and thickness in various places
on the internet. Hope this helps and good luck on your run! Brian W.

Buzz,

I'm flying Light Sport rules, so I can't put the gear clean up stuff on and go too fast. Also the weight is a problem for now.

Earl

Hi again Earl,
I did buy the strips and several other products to get the ball rolling on the drag reduction program for the Lightning and my Esqual LS. I donated all of these things to Nick for Lightning's use knowing that Brian, working on his masters, would have more time to experiment than I would. So go to Nick for what you need. I am sure they will be happy to have you use any of the things if it will help your effort. Of course when you set your new world's record, and the news and film crews have you on national news, Nick and I expect to be added to the list of "people that you thank and that made this historic world record flight possible". And if the reporter that is interviewing you is a pretty lady, give her my phone number.
Best of luck,
Buz

PS: If you still need to reduce your overall aircraft weight by ten pounds, just let five pounds of air out of each main tire. Smile
