I am ready to install my Anywhere Map hp 5550 GPS in my RV4. No room on the
panel! Has anyone use the canopy frame to use as a mount? I was thinking of
the right hand front corner of the canopy frame. Anyone done it or close to
it? It is set up to use the Bluetooth antenna but with a power connection.
Also will drive my Digitrak autopilot.

Hi Bruce:

I have an RV-4 and am just about to buy the Anywhere Map system. Several
other local RV guys do have the system and seem to like it. What is your
impression thus far? I decided to consider this vs. a Garmin unit due to
the space constraints in the -4 (I have a nice panel with a UPS GX-55 for
GPS navigation). I am interested mostly in the XM weather feature.
Personally my plan was to mount the WX Worx unit somewhere in the baggage
compartment with the antenna mounted on the rear fuselage under the canopy
(adjacent to the current GPS antenna). I plan to hard wire the electrical
system to the HP Ipaq and, at least to begin with, may just use Anywhere's
knee strap and store the HP Ipaq when not in use velcroed to the side of my
upholstery under the right canopy rail. Are you going to use an external
GPS antenna or will the Ipaq receive a signal OK?

My brand new IPaq AnywhereMap works great in RV6 Tip up mounted in LH Corner of my cockpit away from panel about by the canopy internal latch repease of the tip up area - without external GPS antenna. I have the WX blue tooth and I remote the antenna up to glarishield area. I power it all from a cig lighter adapter for now may hard wire later but enjoy taking the system into the car to play with and learn it more. The WX box really has enough leads and can be behinid the RV6 seats, been sitting it in the whell on the copilot side under the rudder cable pathway (again think RV6) B-Tooth works fine for the most part,,, I use a RAM Ball mount I modified not theirs supplied - it was same RAM mount location & pieces for my Garmin Pilot III (which will be on Ebay when I get around to it)....think you might want it close to your eyesite limitations in sun glar wiped out detail and to far aweay the type gets mighty small.....so far loving it some glitches and time with support services for a few gremlins, but compared to the Garmin 396/496's unit is smaller and TOM TOM with all the PDA benefits and at a substancial savings over the Garmin made the decision easy for me. Wirless internet in areas for instant weather download kewl too...

I have the Pilot III and I have it mounted on my canopy rail directly in front of my face. It is high enough so that it doesn't block the view of any of my instrument panel and high enough to see and operate with ease. It also doesn't block any outside view but top of my cowling only. I use the unit mounted antenna. I installed a power plug and run the unit off aircraft power.

We tried to mount in the same place a Garmin 196 unit but because of the larger size it ended up in the back for the PAX and the Pilot III is still up front with me.

I can sent photos if requested.
