Went flying today and when I went to put the plane back in the hanger, I couldn't. Parking brake was not set, but the wheels were locked up solid. Did some looking around and discovered I could get the brakes to release by moving the rudder back and forth. Figured the problem might be the selector valve. Pulled it out and cleaned it up. No obvious problems. Put it back in and no change. Then I noticed that when I squeeze and release the brake lever instead of a quick "phist" of air I get a slow hiss down by the reducer valve. Well hell, that must be the problem. Out comes that valve. Cleaned it up (boy was it dirty) and put it back in. Well, you guessed it, no change. What's up?
Thanks,
Jay

Jay,
What is "that valve"? Are you talking about the brake reducing valve that is under the floor in the rear cockpit on the right side? (Yak 52). When you had the "selector valve" out, did you put a new overhaul kit in it? Doug Sapp has overhaul kits for both the brake differential valve (selector valve) and the brake reducing valve (that valve?). Do you have any binding in either the front or rear brake cable causing the brake handle to appear to release very slowly? This is not a common problem. BTW, is your airplane a 52 or a CJ?

Dennis,
Yes it is a Yak 52. The first valve that I took out and cleaned was the "selector valve". Did not rebuild it with seals as it looked just fine. The second valve that I took out was the one under the floor in the right side of the rear cockpit. That "reducer valve" was very dirty inside but the seals looked to be in good condition. As for the brake cable, I will look at that this morning. It does release very slowly. Thanks for the help.

The kits are about $65 each from Doug. If you don't know when they were last rebuilt, I would strongly recommend you consider rebuilding them.
