Hi everyone,

I am expecting delivery of my ex-Romanian Air Force aircraft on or about the
18th of September. I am looking forward to the process of getting this
aircraft flying again and getting involved in discussion with you all at the
same time. I wish I knew about this list a few years back when I first
started thinking about the L-29. Still working my way through previous
postings and it looks like there is lots of good info collected over the
years.

Paul H. I have already visited your web site and it looks like our aircraft
were sisters. Another one in the batch with mine was AC #53. My aircraft is
#26 and it is coming from the U.K.

Cheers,

Frank Deeth

I have good friends in Melbourne and Wangg. Wilson Ford (Dick Ford) Geoff
Wittig the Subaru dealer in Wangg.(Both pilots.)

Maybe I should take a holiday and help put it together. At least that would
be my excuse for visiting. Of course all of us on this list would be happy
to visit and give our 2 cents worth. (You get what you pay for!)

Thanks Bill,

It will be a while before I am ready to start putting it together. I want to
take home the various sections of the aircraft and do as much as I can at
home first and then when there is nothing left to do take it back to the
airport and start putting it together. I have no idea how long that will
take and what maintenance requirements there are on the aircraft. Not being
a licensed aircraft engineer (or un-licensed for that matter!) I also need
to find an engineering shop that is willing to supervise my work. I guess I
will know more when I get it here and can survey it all.

Frank,

Well congratulations on the purchase!

#52 is currently in my garage being stripped to the bare airframe for a
complete upgrade of wiring and avionics. Crazy, I know, but it was an
amazing airframe for the money and I work in the avionics business......

Thanks for looking at www.L-29.org

I've been trying to get the links to the tech pubs to work. Will call
the ISP again asap and get those online.

Hopefully one day in the not too distant future we will be able to fly
an element of L-29s into OSH....

Have you thought about paint schemes yet?

Cheers

Paul

Hey Paul,

Yeah, I couldn't get your tech pubs links to work. I am pretty certain I
have copies of most things although the parts manuals interested me greatly.
I don't think I have them.

Great shots of the un-loading process. I intend to down load them to use for
my own unpacking.

How much time did your airframe have on it if you don't mind me asking? Did
your aircraft come through the people from the U.K or did you have someone
else organise it?

I have some ideas on colour scheme but it is not the usual military scheme
nor is it just a funky civil scheme. It is completely historic for the
aircraft and will hopefully still be different and before you try and guess,
no it is not tiger stripes! I have seen some shots of L-29's with similar
variations so it is not completely un-known.

Cheers,

Frank

That would be great thanks Greg. I’ll e-mail you off list.

Yeah it’s a great race track. Sorry that the two Aussie boys spoiled the party at Laguna last week! I am planning on making the MotoGP at Philip Island this year.

Hi Boyce,

I've been picking away at it sporadically. I just didn't update the
site yet.

Front cockpit is now completely stripped of wiring, canopies etc. Rear
is next.

I expect to begin the process of stripping the paint in early fall.

The goal is to completely modernize the aircraft with Dual ADAHRS, PFD,
MFD, TAS, WSI Wx, AC etc etc.

I'm not completely nuts because I get a lot of this for "free" from
work.... J

If you had to pay for any of it, unless you are just rolling in dough, it's a waste money that you will never see out of it. When you can buy a flying certified good a/c for about 35K.

They are great planes though and I love mine but everytime I think about doing the same thing and making like an "Oskosh" show plane I stop myself. I would rather spend the money on a L-39 or T-33.

I have to differ with this opinion. You might have $60,000- to $100,000
or a bit more in a L-29 that is in -show plane condition. Whether you get it all
back or not, you would have a very special one of a kind aircraft to be
quit proud of that would still allow for cheap parts and maintenance and
easy to work on. An L-39 in show plane condition might be
$295,000 -350,000 range or more and the restoration would not be
something you could do in your garage. I saw 17 L-39 at Oshkosh this
year. Only one in genuine military colors. Just 2 L-29 and they were nice to see. Its not a case of the L-29
being a cheap step child to the L-39. L-29 has its own proud history and you don't see many nice ones on any FBO ramps. Unforntualy not many elect to make their L-29 really nice. Most are out of the box flyers.

Two different aircraft, both great in their own right. Safe flying to all

Is this to say you could do a restoration of the L-29 in your garage? Not being funny(some people can't change the oil in there cars!), is it that much simpler in terms of systems & complexity?

well some work could be performed in a well equipped garage. (nose section work) etc. The systems are very different (APU, back up electrical system, fan jet engine) L-39 is a wonderful aircraft, but not a home hobbyist project. The L-29 is not for an auto mechanic either. But is substantially more simple and parts are cheaper and available.
