Hi! All
Sign of times ahead ?
My brand new 914 will not stop? (except by fuel switch) Any ideas ….except external mag kill wires, switches and shieldings?
All external wires and switches have been proven OK.
Arthur from North Wales says someone recently in the USA had a similar problem?
BTW thanks for trailer responses I believe I’m fixed up from Lincoln.
Regards

Bob I had a similar problem with my 914 in early days. It boiled down to the
quality of the earthing connections in the mag circuits. Regards, David

Bob,
I would double check the mag switch connections.
When installing a Rotax, I usually check the spark (and absence of) when
turning the engine over during "oiling up" before first start.
Some info on the mag wire connection here :
http://contrails.free.fr/engine_rotax_mag_connect_en.php
All the best with your project,
Best regards,

Bob
I would check your grounding wires again and again, insure all are connected properly. The engines are all run tested at the factory before delivery so odds are something in your wiring is not correct. Since there are two independent circuits, A fires the top plugs and B fires the bottom plugs both of those would have to be defective from the factory (if your engine continues to run smoothly when your grounded switches are on.) I think you will eventually find it in your wiring.

Hi! David, Gilles, Jerry.
Thanks for your responses.
I now have two new mag kill wires direct from the mag connectors to the
mag groundings (just to prove it isn't my wires or switches) The plugs
still are sparking? An Electrical Contrator also checked it all out and
proved my wires and switches. The dealer is beginning to mutter "damaged
boxes" however I haven't any reason to think I damaged anything?

Don't you just hate when this happens?
Lastly I would insert an alligator clip (with connecting wire to another
clip) into the grounding Connection right at the module insuring a good
connection with that bullet connector (That is inside that protective
sleeve) then connect the other end to the manifold or other handy metal
engine part. Forget about switches for now. Maybe you've tried this already
but if you do this and get spark, well then I would suspect the wire at the
ignition module, could you have pulled on the connector bullet and pulled it
loose from the wire? Usually when you hear of ignition modules being
defective, it causes the engine not to start or to run rough not your
situation. Good luck.

Hi! Jerry
That's how it is now with new wires. BTW They are no longer bullets but
long skinny thin spades. "No Kill" Prevails .....Me'thinks why the
change ?

I checked with my Rotax guy in Canada and he says to check the installation
manual to insure you have the proper connections. You should have gotten a
bag of parts with the proper pin to connect to your grounding wire and
insert into the top right corner of the 6 pin module plug. That should be
the only "empty" connection left after plugging together. If you don't have
the manual you can down load it at Rotax. Maybe you have done this already.
Good luck again.

Bob and all,
My opinion is that the bullet connectors are just good enough for
automobiles and lawn mowers.
But the latest manuals hardly mention the change. Hence the pictures at
http://contrails.free.fr/engine_rotax_mag_connect_en.php
One must be careful when crimping the small open barrel terminals, as it
is easy to crimp on the insulation instead of the copper. Of course you
may already have checked and re-checked, but did you extract the kill
terminals from the connector to inspect the crimp and test continuity,
and make sure they are inserted the correct way round ?
Also inserting a pin direct in the module connector to connect to ground
may allow to rule out the kill switch, wire and crimp.
Also are the kill wires and module ground terminals connected at the
same place on the firewall (ground stud, forest of tabs, etc) ?
Best regards,

Hi! Gilles,Jerry,Ron,David,Ivor, Neville etc.
Just a line to confirm that my connection KILL wires were in fact
correct ......wait for it ........ but in the incorrect connector.
Clearly working from PHOTO COPIES DOESN'T SUIT ME ! Oil out of the
exhaust also seems to have cleared.
Gilles ...I trust you won't tell the Jabiru list of my trials and
tribulations !
I'm most obliged to those who made efforts to assist, Ivor with help
over the computer connections for throttle calibration and to Trevor
Pond for the kind help over the loan of his trailer.
The engine is now running AOK it has balanced carbs, FUEL FLOW TESTS are
all COMPLETED. Hope to get the placarding done, Mod 74 and have the
Flight Test permit available soonest.
Regards to all.

Bob,
I promise
Glad to hear you got things sorted out.
BTW, just before receiving your message I noticed that I was pointing at
the wrong connector in one of my pictures. I'm changing the picture
right away.

PS : Any of you gentlemen happen to cross the Channel ? Why not call at
St Valery (LFOS, between Dieppe and Le Havre) where I am presently
giving flight lessons until the end of August ? Restaurant on the field
or within walking distance, no landing fee.
