SERV members, I posted this to the OhioValleyRVators under the subject ...
"Nice guy, that Rick Gray ... (or my long trip home from OSH)"
It was going to be a short version with the longer version posted here. Well, it kind of just grew, and I dare not make it any longer so here is my "story". Go get a cup of coffee.
James
p.s. "Smokey", I was wondering for a while if I you would beat me home again!!
==========================================================
You guys in the Ohio Valley already know this and I have known it for some time but I figured I would say it here for the record.
"Nice guy, that Rick Gray, he is."
Here's the story (was going to be short form but as usual, I got long winded ) .....
Some time after Rick got the word from the EAA people that it might be a good idea for him to be around for the award ceremonies, he and I were chatting. He was deciding whether to go home or not. I mentioned that **IF** he decided to go back on Sunday, maybe we could fly back to KPKB together. I would then proceed from there to KCAE (Columbia, SC). Since we fly formation quite a bit it always feels better to me when I am with or as "wingman". He says OK.
Sunday morning comes and we depart together (well, that 540-based RV10 "launches" and I try to catch up, even with Rick "complaining" that he is at "IDLE". A nice flight along the Chicago coast line and over to KPHD to drop off a passenger (Terry). Along the way, (after Chicago) as we were climbing for better viz, I started not feeling 100% and told Rick to go on and I would get there. I HAD to get lower for a better view of the ground. He would hear nothing of it. So not only is he throttled back in that 540 to slow down to my little 320 speeds (160 kts true) but he is down in the haze, gunk and bumps so as not to leave me there all alone!
We get to KPHD and gas up. Only 20 minutes from Rick being home. We take off and I am not 100% and the viz is not great and I look at the 496 and **YIKES**, looks like a storm is near KPKB. "Buckeye Lead, "2" cannot handle this. Not feeling good. Storm somewhere along the route. Going back to land at KPHD. You go on home." Nope! Nothing doing. He turns around and "leads" me back to KPHD to land! Now by the time we get there, get the planes shut down and check the weather again, the cell that I saw is approaching KPKB. So there he sits with me for 4 hours or so. Missed the window to get home to wife and kids to make sure I was OK.
I decide to check in to a hotel for the night and when the weather passes, Rick goes on home later that evening.
Next morning, while I am out on the ramp, Terry stops by and gets on my case for not calling, given that I ended up staying overnight in his town. Nice people these airplane people. I tell him if I am in his area again, I will call.
Well, I take off, and barely get out of the pattern. Weather absolutely lousy, unfamiliar territory and me not 100%, I turn around again and land. I call Terry and he offers me one of his cars and after we do lunch, I check into the hotel, AGAIN.
Once again, the next morning I head out to try to make it home. I call Rick and tell him the story. He says if I can make it to KPKB and wish to stop, we can do breakfast. And if I cannot make it any further, I always have a place to stay. I say thanks but I hope to make it on home as it *looks* like all might be OK.
Off I go. I fly right over KPKB enroute to KCAE. At 6500 it is hazy from the early fog and stuff, along with the sun's glare but I can kinda make it OK. I keep saying ... if it gets no worse than this, I am OK to cross the "mountains". Well, what was probably 8 miles and haze when I started, soon became a lot less as the day wore on and the elevation and temperature began to rise. I started climbing higher but the higher I climbed, the worse it seemed to get!!! Next thing I know, I am telling Indy Center that I am turning around for Parkerburg!
I safely land at KPKB, to be met by Ty (RV7A builder) and not more than 5 minutes later, up pulls Rick and the kids about to go for breakfast in his beautiful Oshkosh Award Winning RV10. He has a look of surprise (concern??) on his face as I had told him that I was NOT stopping ... that I was going on home. So of course I have to explain. And what does he do? Insist that I do NOT get a hotel. That I DO come to his place if I don't leave KPKB and that I stay there "as long as it takes" for me to get good enough health and weather to get home! And I did just that.
Rick and his family have been accommodating before. This is just the way they are. I got up the next morning with a lot more rest and feeling a lot better. I was able to tackle the weather situation with a lot greater safety margin and a lot of credit goes to Rick.
As Rick would say ..."Thanks buddy!"
James ... FINALLY back home
RV6 "PapaJuliette"
p.s. About half way across the "mountains" the viz deteriorated and buildups increased to the point where I told Atlanta Center that I was turning around and landing at the nearest airport (had been keeping close tabs on "my way out". I landed at Mountain Empire, got lunch, waited for the viz to imporve and launched just in time to get home and get just a few drops of the afternoon thunderboomers. Even though I am instrument rated and the plane has the "equipment", I am a REAL WIMP when it comes to this kind of weather ... especially when there is cumulous-granitous around as well.

Nothing unusual about this OSH report:
Challenging weather - CHECK.
Incredibly generous pilots help along the way - CHECK.Finally home, ragged & behind schedule - CHECK.
Can't wait until next year to do it again - CHECK.
I had similar battles with the weather. That's the price I paid for great weather going up.

James,
What an ordeal. You handled it well and with the kind support of Rick and all, it sounds like you might have even had some fun. Did you get a ride in the RV-10?
I'm getting a taste of nasty flying conditions here, but its not clouds, it's smoke. I was 4000 feet above the fire this morning and was on instruments. Couldn't see the ground most of the way around the fire and only knew that I was over the fire edge when I felt it pushing me up. Just enough visibility to get a few helicopters in with buckets and we had to keep them separated as they were unable to see much except the ground underneath them. The Flathead valley (Kalispell, MT) is socked in most of the time now, but the tower keeps calling 3 miles visibility even though we can't see the runway from a close downwind. (They know if it goes IFR we will stop fighting the fire from the air.)
I'll be coming home on Aug 12th, so hope we can get the gang together for a few formation practices before I have to come back to the fires.
Glad you are home, safe.
Smokey
