Hello all,

I just received my monowheel speed kit. I tried to remove the outrigger OR3 fork to install the fairings. No way. Then I tried to remove the nylon leg from OR1. Impossible. May be the nylon has expanded with aging . Any suggestion ?

Remi

No suggestions, but if you ever do get the kit to fit I would be very interested to know what your airspeed increases by.

Regards

Pete

If you get desperate try putting the whole leg in a freezer for a few hours and then locally heat the aluminium fittings with a hot air gun. As they conduct heat quicker they may expand sufficiently to become loose.

nylon absorbs up to 7% by weight of water so probably has swolen. You
might try dehydrating it with silica gell?

Remi.
I encountered the same problem in a similar situation. Your intellect will not serve you well
here, you have to resort to brute force:

Put a bolt fitting the axle holes of the fork through the 2 holes. The bolt must be long enough to extend
at least 3-4 centimeters either side of the wheel fork.
Then strike the bolt with many small strikes parallel to the leg, on alternate sides of the fork,
and you will see the fork moving gradually off the leg. At least I did.

Now, I have a problem:
I've just put on a new mono-tyre, McReady Air-trac 8.00 x 6. pumped to 15 psi.
It turns out that the tyre is in contact with the sides of the wheel leg, emitting sgueals during taxy like a couple
of fighting piglets.
It is not only the pensive looks from stewardesses and other impression-worthy groups connected to
aviation that bothers me, when I pass them by, squealing insanely, it is also the palpable temperature of the
sides of the tyre after taxying to the hangar.
Imagine the loss of face and money, if the squealing progress comes to an abrupt halt with an almighty
thunderclap from a burst inner tube in front of an awe-struck crowd!

Apart from parting with another 100 £ buying a 7.00 x 6 tyre, is there any possibility of splaying the UC-leg
about one mm each side? I already have untightened the central bolt through the hub a couple of threads.
To no avail.
Any suggestions?

Nylon expands when it absorbs moisture. So you could try drying them
for a few days. However, I found that the nylon legs supplied with the
kit were slightly larger in diameter than the OR1 and Or3 sockets. I
had to shave off on a lathe to get it to fit properly. If you forced
them in, it may be impossible to remove. The only alternative would be
to cut off the legs and drill out the nylon. I would try the drying
option first.

Niels
those gear legs are not too difficult to bend. You could jack it out a
few mm. then squeeze it back in th fiut the wheel with a block of wood
where the tire touches to hold the gap at that point.
You, being a medical engineer should be able to silence those unhappy
piglets !?;-0

I had the same problem getting the nylon out to get the forks painted. I put them in the freezer. The next day they fell out when I picked them up.

Thank you Troy, but as I cannot remove the leg from the wing, I have to find a freezer big enough to put the whole wing in!

Rather than using a large freezer try using either ice or dry ice to
cool the area.

Hi Remi,

I had exactly similar problem and solved it as follows:

I made a vertical cut by Dremel to the back side of the fairing.
After it was possible to stretch it enough to slide in over the fork.
Before painting I sealed the cutting by Sika mass
and added a small alumimium clip by two pop-rivet for extra strenght.

Very easy, fast and straightforward - so far no penalties att all.
If necessary it is also easy to remove now.

Be carefull - fairing material is quite brittle.

Hope this helps, Raimo

Thanks to those who have provide advice. I finally managed to remove those outrigger forks without damaging anything. Using a powerful hair dryier, I heated the forks, trying to twist them at the same time with a lever. After a few hours of cooling at room temperature, they finally came out with a heavy twist and pull.

Niels

Try puting 25 or 30 psi in the tire.

The original tire supplied with my kit was also the old 800 x 6. I operate off a paved runway and the tires rubbed the sides of the gear legs on landing. The higher pressure gave me a little extra clearance between the gear leg and the tire. I replaced that tire with a 700 x6 6ply rating. It makes the a/c ground handling much better.

Thanks, Jim. The increase of pressure is one of the options i've been thinking of. Just being somewhat
reluctant to go above 20 psi, because, as John Wigney said, it might make the landings even more interesting than
at present.
Today i splayed the legs with a jack, and after some experimenting as to the amount of splaying, kept the
shape by positioning a 10mm steel tube between the vertical sides of the UC leg just proximal to the tyre.
The tube was fixed with a bolt at each end. So far it seems to work fine.
