I had to move much of the finished parts of my scratch build project into
the driveway while I checked a sill in the barn to check for rot and
carpenter ants... (while repairing the outside my son saw some areas that
worried him) .. In the interim someone parked in the driveway, my son had an
emergency and swinging to avoid the other car he backed over a sizeable
number of parts, most are salvagable but alas some will have to be redone...
arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh. If he were at all handy with tools I would have him
redo them but sadly he is not ... so after a proper respite to coll me off I
shall plod ahead.. I am sure other's have some horror stories of their own
this is just mine.. no need to reply I just had to vent to someone who would
 understand the angst ... 8^(

				Ron-
80% of us understand. I hauled my share of junk to the scrapyard.
Unfortunately, I couldn't use my son as a scapegoat.

At least you can yell and call your son all sorts of nasty names. I had
the misfortune of having a helping hand from my Father -N-Law. I am
proud of myself though, I was able to smile all the way through him
installing no less then 10 smilies in my 601's turtle deck. After he
left I switched the skins over to .025. He never knew he did any damage
and I never told the wife, she holds him on a higher plane of existence

				Ron,

I'll bet he can use a paint brush or a lawn mower. Sounds to me like you get
a free paint job on the house, and lawn service for a year!! You will be
doing him a favor as I am sure he is crushed with guilt!

				Ron,

I feel your pain! Sorry to say, I am more the type of person to run over the parts than to manufacture them. Not fun for either party, however.

Ouch Mark ..My father in law and my own father are as they say "in a better
place"( higher plane? 8^). My father in law flew a really great old Aeronca
back in the 1930's but he wasn't of a nature to build or repair almost
anything. Luckily for him the plane outlasted his wife's interest. He was a
bit older than his wife and was Customs agent in Northern Vermont. She was a
Canadian girl and "loved to fly" right up until they got married ..heh ..
Now my Dad was never interested in flying but could build anything. I miss
 them both.

I'm only a week into my 701 project and I already found a way to screw something up. I turned on the large fan in the shop and turned around just in time to see the skin for my stabilizer fly off the work bench and crash to the floor. I don't know about the smiley things you guys talk about, mine had several large frowns on it. I cried and cussed for a while and then was quite pleased to find that a sack of lead shot and a rubber mallet made things almost like new. With a creative paint job, "you" wouldn't know it was there.

				Ron,
Thank you for the story. I thought I was the only one that destroys everything I touch. For my latests mess up it is the elevator skin. I am building 701 by componets. Would most of you order the new skin from ZAC or would you attempt to make the curve (elevator) on a fresh sheet of metal.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience. If I had the money I would order it from Zenith but if like me you are on a shoestring budget I guess I would be stuck with redoing it..haven't skinned elevator yet so I can't give you a more informed answer. Good luck with your choice and your project..

				Robert,
I too messed up on my elevator skin. I just bought a sheet of .016 from Aircraft Spruce and redid my own. It worked out fine. FYI, you do not have to pre bend the elevator skin nose if you have enough hands to help and enough ratchet straps.

Beating on the son for a while with the bent-up parts would do it for me. They're lightweight aluminum so he ought to suvive that just fine.

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Understood. Been there, done that. Feels just like having an old and very helpful friend install one of the canopy springs upside down on the side away from you, and then closing the canopy just enough to hear the sproinggg,POP as the spring breaks. A deep breath, go to the happy place in your mind, add a pinch of zen, and carry on.

I had a near experience like this. My clod nephews started galloping around like a couple fools with the old joking "whoah, I'm gonna fall on it" stuff, then they're father actually trips over a part, luckily no damage. The learning experience was, these people can't be anywhere near anything of value. This is AFTER I told them to be careful. Believe me, had someone destroyed something they would have been in for a Exorcist moment.
