Hello All,

Im in need of some technical assistance.

My low fuel light is staying on with plenty of fuel in the header tank.

Any ideas of how to get it off?

Thanks,

Michael

I had problems with mine and the steps I took to correct were to: take any filters out of the system from tank to header. Remove the hose coming from the tanks and blow air in reverse to clear the screen in the tank. Replace the gaskets on the caps with the ones for the mercedees. Mine work great now.

There are certainly several possibilities: 1) It's stuck. 2) It's broken. 3) The fuel level's low. Don't discount this last. My header tank will run the top 1/2" dry upon re-fill until the turbulence works all the air out. I find it's also easy to get sealant on it during installation. Finally, if it's a float sensor, and the sensor falls off, (breaks,) the light will illuminate. Unfortunately you'll have to pull it and take a look.\

It all depends on how the switch is wired. A lot are wired hot (B+) to the light and then the switch in the header tank only provides a ground when the fuel goes low. If this is how your light is wired then you probably have a short circuit (to ground) somewhere between the light itself and the switch. Favoured places are in block connectors where a wire can come part way out and short off either the frame of neighbouring wires.

What kind of low fuel sensor do you have MIchael? Mechanical (float-type) or optical?

What kind of low fuel warning do you have? Is it the float type or light
sensor type?

When I put mine in, I thought it was in correctly. In fact I had mounted it upside down. I still am shaking my head about that one....

Hi Michael-
Being as how yours is a Murle Williams-built plane, it probably has
the Williams Aviation low-fuel system in it. That consists of a float
switch inside of a small aluminum tank. You may have fuel in your
header tank but none in the low-fuel switch tank. Make sure that the
vent line from the switch tank is not plugged or kinked. The way this
system works is the fuel runs from the wing tanks to the header tank,
and is vented up through the low-fuel tank and back up to the right-
hand (usually) wing tank. When fuel fills the header tank, it also
fills the low-fuel tank, lifting the float, and thus shutting off the
low-fuel light.
Also, like Noel said, make sure that the wiring is not grounded at
any place besides the ground wire from switch to ground....if this is
the type system you have.
