As I near being ready to fly my Ultrastar, two questions for the US experts:
1. When I pick up the wing struts and tip them back and forth, something (sounds like very small particles) rattles back and forth. I'm guessing it's drill chips from the rivet holes, or perhaps pop rivet stems? Should I be concerned? There doesn't seem to be any evidence of corrosion, and the plane has always been stored indoors as far as I'm aware.
2. The manual (which I didn't have at first) says, "Never allow the wing tip to be lowered to the ground without first removing the rear spar attachment pin. Otherwise the inboard wing fittings would be subject to a great deal of strain." I did this once myself, though I immediately realized something was wrong, and may have been done before, too. Is hidden damage likely? What should I check? I will be replacing all the primary hardware throughout the airframe anyway, "just because".
I'd sure hate to discover a structural problem at 500'!
I'd also appreciate any suggestions on folding/unfolding the wings solo. The previous owner gave me the prop he used, but it's kind of cumbersome. I'm sure I can work something out, but why reinvent the wheel?

It's possible that the wing could have been re- covered in the past. If you hear a lot of pieces rattle then they are probably the remnants of drilled out rivets. Some builders will inject some covering adhesive to tack them in place.

Hey Dana,
Did you have your Ultrastar test flights yet?
Im interested to hear how you like it, as I'll also be in the position to test fly in a month or two.
What engine do you have on it?
I still have one patch to finish painting and another one on the wing to do.
There is a collapsed rib at the end of one wing on the upper leading edge.
It buckled due to over tightening of the fabric, not during fabric application but some time after.
I have also fixed my Cuyuna UL-202 and need to test run it....its all comming together slowly but steadily.
Fortunately being in Southern California I dont have to concern myself with much of a winter and hence don't need to rush to beat the weather.
I knew there was a good reason for moving here.
I will be able to get into the wing and fix the rib from the underside where there needs to be a patch in any case.

Not yet, but soon... and I'm getting antsy! I just sprayed the last color
coat over some minor fabric repairs (hangar rash on the rudder and one
elevator). Then fix the pitot tube, replace the fuel lines, bleed the
brakes, and it's ready. Up until now most of the time has been spent
getting the trailer ready and registered so I can get it to the airport,
but that's finally done. Problem is I have too many other projects
competing for my time.
Engine is the same as yours, the UL0202.

Yaa....my rudder/elevator also has those tang holes from folding it up flush.....another couple patches for those required and a pool foamie to sandwitch between them when folding it up next time.
Im about the same place as you with the patching then except for my buckled rib.
I hear you on those projects.....I also have a glider I'm flying that needs a new tail wheel and a Moni motor glider project at 90%, plus the house needs paint, and the Hobie cat needs some maintenance etc etc.
I also need to drill & tap my spare Cuyuna 430 for the prop flange in case my UL-202 repair produces less than optimal results. Its a couple HP less and a bit Heavier than the UL-202 but only has 50 hrs but I thought I would try the UL-202 first to keep things stock.
