Ralph:
You mentioned Arizona and towers not being a problem. I fly west of Phoenix
were we actually have about 3 square miles of uncontrolled airspace and let
me tell you, there are lots of towers out there. Some blinking and some
not. Our biggest problem is that we fly in the vicinity of a nuclear power
plant and there are power lines every where and some are really tall. None
of these towers have lights but they are big enough that they are not to
difficult to see and I know where most of them are. My rule is to pick a
tower and fly directly over it because the power lines are difficult to see.
Another thing that helps is to follow the center of the road. I have seen
lots of towers either side of a road but never one in the middle of the road
or in the land between a devided highway. I am sure there is an exception.
I learned IFR (I Follow Roads) flying when I was a Spam Can pilot and we
would "scud run" to get home.
Most towers are not a problem in our area if you stay more than 500 feet
AGL. One of out biggest obstacles is the housing development balloons.
There are so many housing construction sites and many of them are going to
teethed balloons as an attraction. I have a Gatlin gun modification
ordered. I guess that might blow the weight right off the scale.

Vic, it was a "openness" statement. But I see that you have to deal with
other problems. According to somebody somewhere: if something is tethered
from the ground, it isn't officially flying and doesn't come into FAA
jurisdiction! Probably wrong. Might be a myth. By the way, gatlin guns are
really archaic. Lasers are now very in and leave no reminates. However they
do require a considerable amount of power. Power is weight and weight will
hold a plane.
