I am doing my annual on my plane, and wanted to know if lubrication is required for the guide bushing? if so LPS1 or TRIFLOW. Can someone help.
Thanks

Ray, some people lube the elevator tube midship bushing and some don't. I use white lithium graese on mine because that is what skystar used on their planes when I visited the factory in 1994. Smooth as silk!

FWIW I used tri flow, but the best thing you can do for that area is make a simple dust/dirt sock to keep crap out of there.

When adding lubricant you will likely be adding something that will attract dust, dirt etc which can become abrasive.
I think it is just a guide more than a actual tight fitting bushing.
Is it binding now ? You should be able to move stick full aft and let go to have the stick return full forward. If not something could be binding.

One of the messy jobs I had at the AMO was greasing the flap tracks of
Cessnas. Just about all the planes we serviced were on commercial contracts
so we saw then every 50 hr... No exceptions. What used to get me is every
time I went to grease the tracks there would be great gobs of grease all
over them, usually full of dust, flies, bugs, etc. The first thing I would
have to do is to get all the old crap off. The MM for the plane said a
light coat of grease and that is what they got what would fit on the top of
your little finger would be enough to lubricate one track ( there were 4).
The idea was to put enough on to lubricate but not enough to catch dirt, and
re lubricate often enough so there wouldn't be a build up of crud.
The rest of the pivots on the plane were also oiled with a light oil, then
it was wiped clean, oiled again and the excess was wiped off....again every
50 hr. Doing this not only assured the smooth operation of all controls but
it gave us the chance to have a close up look at every part of the plane.
One day I asked one of the pilots where all the grease was coming from...
He said he thought we had forgotten to put grease on the tracks so he "Went
at 'er" with a can of axel grease.

I have a couple questions since we are on the subject of lubrication. Is there a downside to lubing all the contact points on the plane?
I have been spraying pulley, the yoke connections etc with wd-40 every month. Am I doing something wrong here?
What is a good recommended oil lubricant and what should I spray?

For small parts like pulleys I like 3 in 1 for electric motors. Dirt
doesn't seem to stick to it as much. It does penetrate into the bearings
and the excess wipes off easily.
My water rudder cables I wipe with hard grease and again I wipe as much off
as possible to give corrosion protection to those cables. When wiping the
cables remember to wear heavy gloves as well as the rags. That protects
your hands from finding a broken strand. So far no broken strands.
I have used motorcycle chain lube for some areas that require more
lubrication and penetration. Spray the area with the chain lube and quickly
wipe off the excess. You have to work fast with it as it goes from a
penetrating state to a sticky mass pretty quick. One area that I have used
the chain lube are water rudders.
BTW I also chain lube on the actuator arm for our old C band satellite dish.
It never froze at all with the chain lube regardless of outside temperature.
