In May last year... with great trepidation... I went down to
Fullerton Airport for the "Combat Fighter Pilot Experience" that my
wife had given me as a birthday present. That's me in the front seat
off for the wildest ride of my life.
While watching the local news today I saw this:

I did that in a T-6 some years ago and it was the best flying experience of
my life. When the instructor pilot briefed me and said, "If at some point I
cannot control the aircraft, I'll say in the intercom Bail out! Bail out!
Bail out! Then you unbuckle your lap belt, slide the canopy open, climb on
the back of the wing and dive down and away, then pull the chute." I
thought, Cool!

Jeff,
I am not sure if your email was "out of the blue" or in response
to the article on the cover of the LA times California section today.
That EXACT plane made an emergency landing near seal beach yesterday
(Friday) after the engine quit while doing aerobatics over the ocean.
Now I know why they leave the wheel pants off; sand landings.
There is a brief bit of video on the LA times site but I don't
know how long it will be posted.
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/?track=leftnav-local
80% of the way down on the right (look for video = 10/18 Plane Makes
Emergency Lading on Beach).

Anyone know what the plane hit upon landing? There is [at a minimum] damage to the spinner and prop. There does not appear to be anything in the vicinity that caused the damage. Could it have happened in the air?

If you follow my link at the base of the e-mail you'll see stills
from the beach landing... so no, not out of the blue. As I was
watching the news report I couldn't stop thinking about how familiar
that plane looked.

My guess is that it nosed over on landing causing the damage, not in the air. Just a guess though.
