Fascinating. Just as a matter of interest, how do you go about founding a
town? Do you just turn up in your Conestoga, drive in a stake and announce
`This is Kolbville`
Intriguing as we have no towns named like that in the UK. Most of our place
names are are descriptions of the locations, usually derived from Saxon,
Danish etc. My town of Bradford on Avon was originally `a broad ford`
across the river. Trowbridge, a nearby town was `Truebrygge`
Many rivers are called `Avon` because when invaders pointed to a river and
asked what it was called the answer was `avon` which was not the name at all
but the local word for `river`.
