Is there a separate photo construction guide for the piano hinged ailerons?
I can't find it anywhere.

Hans,

As far as I know, there is no photo guide for the hinged aileron option. There is a drawing that explains how to do it. If you need that, contact me directly and I'll send it to you.

Hans
I built my wings with the hinged ailerons from the plans. If you have any questions let me know and I'll try to answer them.

Guys,

I’m not building so you can take this accordingly:

About two years ago I went to the Flycorvair.com hanger. I looked over all the cool stuff there. As I talked with Gus, their pilot, I asked his opinion of the hinged ailerons vs. the flex skin. They had recently done a conversion from flex to hinge on their 601XL td. What I got out of the discussion was that the flex tends to center the controls more and the controls were, I think he said stiffer. The hinges were more responsive but you had to pay more attention.

Later I visited Mark Townsend’s house and he something like the flex would be better for cross country and the hinges would be great for tooling around the patch.

What are you guy’s opinions. Mark & Gus, did I repeat you accurately?

I’m just curious.

My plane was in the Flycorvair hangar at the time when Gus installed the hinges on their ailerons. I actually purchased the hinges as part of one of my Aircraft Spruce orders. I'm just reminiscing Smile

When Gus did the flight testing I recall him saying that the ailerons were easier to move on the ground and at very low speeds, but at most flight speeds, there was no difference in feel or force required to move them.

My plane has hingeless ailerons, and I have no plans to change.

Dave

I have the flex hinge on my 601XL and I really don't notice any significant difference. On the ground it definitely feels stiffer but in flight the movement required to get the aircraft to respond is nowhere near the full travel positon. Almost all aileron corrections are better thought of as pressure on the stick or 1/4 inch corrections rather than yanking and hauling on it. The flex hinge is easier to build and mount.

I had the same conversation with Gus, at Oshkosh.

My philosophy that I am following on my airplane is to "keep it as simple as possible".

Hence I have gone with the hingeless ailerons.
