Please put me away..... I had the idea of an award winning finish in my XL so I filled each rivet with putty. I now realize that it will not improve the looks and did you know that there are 8, 346 rivets in the darn thing?....
I m just knuts..........
Name withheld because of embarrassment...

Your not nuts at all.... I sanded down every rivet head so I could have that flush rivet look and when I came in the next day to admire my good work (because it always looks better the next day) it was laying in pieces on the floor. I guess I should have numbered them... Anyone want a truly pre punched kit?????

I had that idea in my head when I first started construction, but talked myself out of it. It certainly would have been a lot of extra work! However I DID fill all the rivets in the instrument panel with JB Weld and lightly sanded it down before painting. It gave the panel a more finished look, and wasn't hard to do.

OF course you are, and every neighbor that walks by your garage says so!! But when they actually call me nuts I just say that I am interesting. Now have two planes in your driveway and you are truly allowed to be called nuts.

No you're not krazy. It will look a heck of a lot better. Have you painted yet? That's when you really notice the difference - don't have all those little black holes looking back at you... We've filled all those holes on a couple of aircraft and the results are really good - keep getting the comment, "Are those solid rivets??" But using putty must have really tedious, there's a much easier way.
Mix polyester resin with enough microballons to give a 'honey' consistency. Mix a half a cup of this and keep it on hand. When you need to fill, take just a teaspoon of the mix in a plastic lid and add several drops of hardener - enough so that it will go hard in half an hour. Use the stem of a 3/32 rivet to dip in the filler and apply to the rivet hole. Poke the stem into each hole, and when you withdraw it will leave a neat drop of filler in there - really quick and easy. Sometimes need to go over again and top up a few that haven't quite filled. When its hardened just a light sand with fine paper to take off any 'pimples' that stand proud. Best to do it while you can still rotate the fuselage to be working down, but can do on the side as well. Only takes a couple hours to do a whole wing panel. Well worth it for appearance and good feeling have those holes sealed.
Attached is a photo of results.
Tailwinds always,
JG
