Hi Folks,
I have a 912UL installed in a Zenith 601HD. Terrific little engine.
I've read in a couple of places that 912 engines are not terribly
susceptible to carb icing, but operating on the principle of "better safe
than sorry", I've been thinking of adding it. I wondered if anyone has any
experience with the unit shown at
http://www.ultralightnews.ca/bing/carbheater.htm. Seems like a simple
solution.
Along the same lines...anyone heard much about the 912XTRA piston conversion
kits - good or bad?

Tim,
Rotax says that using non approved piston will void the warranty.

The one shown on www.ultralight is the mark 1 version sold
by Skydrive. The nice solid body has been replaced (in the
Mark 2 and Mark 3 versions) by a casting around a bit of
bent copper pipe. Not as asthetically pleasing but i am
sure a lot cheaper to make.
Even the Lockwood catalogue shows this mark 1 version.
I am sure if you buy from any of these suppliers you will
get the mark 3 version.
The difference between the mark 2 and mark 3 ? They
deleted the temperature gauge !
I have one, or rather a pair. It does not work if the
water temperature is allowed to get too low, and
unfortunately the time you need the carb heaters working
(cold) is when the water temperature is low. Baffles required.

I am building a searey. Unfortunately the builders technical sight is closed, but one of the builders had the piston installed, but the engine seized in about 20 hours. This would be third hand information, so take it for what its worth.
