STATESVILLE, N.C. -- The owner of a well known Statesville restaurant was killed in a plane crash Wednesday morning in Iredell County.
Risto Toukola died when his plane crashed shortly before 10 a.m. on Happy Lane off Bethlehem Road. The crash scene is one mile west of the Statesville Municipal Airport.
The assistant emergency manger for Iredell County Emergency Management who is at the scene confirms only the pilot was on board.
The FAA described the plane as experimental with the engine in the back of the aircraft.
A spokesperson at the Statesville airport said it appears the plane took off and a piece of canopy that covers the aircraft got tangled in the propeller. There was no distress call.
Toukola owns Mayo's Italian Restaurant in Statesville. He’s had his pilot’s license since 1991.
