Mounting wheel pants?

Gang:

I am at the point to installing the inboard wheel pants hardware for the new style 601XL wheel pants (5.00x5 tires). It seems to me that the attachment points do not offer a lot of support to the pants, which is backed up by the (subjectively) wobbly pants I have seen on many XL's, and by the comparatively massive inboard pant brackets used on the (bit faster) RV's.

I was considering riveting a horizontal arm to the .050 steel inboard bracket, probably from 30mm wide x 0.090 aluminum, to place additional #10 nutplates 4" forward and aft of the axle. There also would be .032 reinforcing plates, maybe 50 x 50 mm, riveted to the inside of the pants at these points.

Anyone done something like this already and can report on effectiveness?

Thanks,

Hi Andy

I thought the same when I installed my 601 XL pants. I didnt add a brace like you mentioned but did think about it. I would do it if I were doing it again. The pants are extremely thin and I wound up adding extra layers of fiberglass inside to make the pants more ridged.
