I removed the gel coat from my intakes on my very old cowl and replaced
with a couple layers of glass. Just wondering if anyone knows how much
the gel coat adds to structural integrity. In other words, are the 2
layers enough to keep from getting stress cracks?

Gel coat is just a coat of colored resin painted into the mold before the
first layups. It adds nothing to the strength and often is prone to
cracking if poorly done. If you've sanded down to the weave and then laid a
couple of layers over that, you have a net gain of strength.
