The Next Adventure: (May 30, thru June 7, 2008, longer or shorter as
desired)
This one is going to be even better than last year’s adventure to
Yellowstone.
In addition to all our friends who made the trip last year, I’m extending an
invitation, to the SERV group, our local 309 EAA Chapter and our friends
that fly formation. If anyone knows someone else that may be interested,
please have them contact me. Everyone is welcome.
Attached are three files: “Tentative Flight Plan”, “The Next Adventure
Links” and “The In List”.
Put the “Tentative Flight Plan” in your flight planner at 150 kts and see
what you think. I made it from Concord, NC (KJQF) to Scottsdale, AZ (KSDL)
with tentative fuel stops and planned layover stops.
As you know if you made last year’s trip, the best part of the trip is
flying together as a group, and everyone being together at the layover
stops. Don’t worry, I will be working on group rates for hotel,
transportation, hangar space, tie-downs and fuel.
The tentative plan for those leaving from the NC area, is to fly to Baton
Rouge, LA (KBTR) together or individually as desired. We spend the first
night, Friday, May 30, in Baton Rouge, and meet everyone else there. Baton
Rouge is an old southern town on the big river with Casinos and lots to
enjoy. Right now I’m looking at the Sheraton Baton Rouge.
The next night, Saturday, May 31, the plan is to spend the night in
Carlsbad, NM (KCNM). If you are interested, we can all tour Carlsbad
Caverns on the day of arrival or the next morning.
The third leg of the trip is only 3:12 to Scottsdale, AZ (KSDL) and what I
call Base Camp. So that makes our arrival at Base Camp, Sunday, Jan, 1.
Lynnie and I are planning on staying in Scottsdale from June 1 thru June 7
and then heading home with stops in Hobbs, NM, and Houston, TX, to visit
friends and relatives.
In Scottsdale Lynnie and I have accepted an invitation to share a suite at
“The Westin Kierland Villas” with Dale Walter and Barbara Buzzi from Ft
Lauderdale, FL. This place is a bit pricey but they have a more reasonably
priced sister facility “The Westin Kierland Resort and Spa” which is
co-located. Additionally, there are many other accommodations in the
immediate vicinity. Again, don’t worry, Cappy will make sure there are
plenty of choices for hotels, transportation, etc.
My vision is, three day trips together from Base Camp.
Trip #1: Petrified Forest, Meteor Crater, Painted Desert, Sunset Crater
Volcano, and finally Sedona, AZ (KSEZ). I plan to have lunch and spend the
rest of the day in Sedona before heading back to Base Camp. Total flight
time 2:40.
Trip #2: Monument Valley, Lake Powell to Page, AZ (KPGA) for gas and lunch,
then Marble Canyon, south over the Grand Canyon and back to base. Total
flight time 3:40.
Trip#3: Peach Springs, over the Grand Canyon west, Lake Mead, the Hover Dam,
and back to base. Total flight time 2:40.
I think we can safely do all three trips and be no higher than 10,500 for
only about 15 minutes. Most of the rest of the time we should be between
6,500 and 8,500.
Currently I'm waiting for the Grand Canyon VFR chart I ordered from
http://skyvector.com/ to arrive, so I can finish planning the Grand Canyon
trips.
There are lots of rules and regulations to learn. So, if you’re planning on
making the trips, I suggest you order the Grand Canyon VFR chart and review
SFAR 50-2, Special Flight Rules in the Vicinity of Grand Canyon National
Park, AZ.
There is so much to do in the area, I’m sure everyone will easily fill the
week with other fun things to do. I want this to be kind of a Freestyle
Event. Everyone, can pick and choose what they want to do each day.
Now have a look at “The Next Adventure Links”. Unbelievable!
If while cruising the net you find other interesting things to do or see,
please let me know so I can share them with the group.
If what you see on the internet doesn’t make you want to be in, I don’t know
what will and you should probably stay home.
Speaking of IN, look at “The In List”. If your name is not on the list and
you are the least bit interested in joining us on “The Next Adventure”
please let me know.
You will not be committed and we all realize plans change, but do try to let
me know your intentions for now. Knowing helps me to plan the adventure
better.
Even if you don’t currently have an airplane, if you know someone that is
going as a single there may be room to tag along. Come on Larry and Pam I’m
sure we can find room for you guys.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
