This is the first in a series of notices about a trip Robert Oliver and I are planning to fly our Kitfoxes to Eastern Canada this July. We plan to leave around the second week of July from the west coast and Denver, and go north to Saskatchewan, along the southern Canadian border through Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and up the St. Lawrence River. Our ultimate goal is to reach Labrador and Newfoundland (all weather-dependent, of course!). We'll return back through the other Maritime Provinces, hopefully including stops at the French islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and back to Maine and the Northeastern States. The trip home would depend on a number of factors, but we would like to end up at Airventure 2008 (Oshkosh) the end of July. The trip would take three to four weeks, depending on where folks were coming from and the weather, of course. We will be camping many nights and staying in lodges and motels/hotels other nights. We may even find a friendly hangar or Kitfox driver's home to stay in.
We are offering this trip to all Kitfoxers for all or part of the trip. Canadians are especially welcome! A few considerations for you to think about before you decide to go: 1) are you proficient in short field landings and otherwise very experienced in your aircraft, 2) are you comfortable with tricky weather conditions, 3) will you be able to get away for 3-4 weeks, 4) are you comfortable flying over remote, adverse terrain (many times without roads below), and 5) are you and your aircraft up to flying a hundred or so hours in 3-4 weeks?
Robert has flown his Kitfox to Alaska three times and once in his RV8A . I lived and flew in Alaska for six years in the 70's, at which time I flew a C-172 from Seattle up the Trench to Anchorage, and have flown my Kitfox to Alaska twice. Last summer, I accompanied Robert in his RV8A. The point is, Robert and I are both experienced in long, backcountry cross country trips, including Western Canada.
If you think you may be interested, let me know, and be sure you have a PASSPORT! We will keep you informed via this list and answer any of your questions on a one-on-one basis off the list. For those of you who can't go along, we should have some interesting trip reports!

I live in Newfoundland, about 25 mi from Gander International the way the ‘Fox flies J
I have been planning a trip across Canada from coast to coast to commemorate sixty years of Newfoundland confederation. I expect the best route for you to take would be to fly to Sept Iles, Qc and from there to Wabush in western Labrador. It should be a nice easy flight from Wabush to Churchill Falls. This is rough country so bring some survival equipment just in case. Churchill to Goose bay should be about two hours and from there you can fly direct to St. Anthony on the island.
If you fly through Labrador on the way East then you should head up the coast through Hopedale and Makovic to Nain the most northern community in Labrador. There are very few strips but the ones that do exist are well cared for.
Getting back to the island there are few strips here too. Many are paved around 100’ wide all the info in the Canada flight supplement has all the info you should need.
Gander is an International Airport but not too busy and the guys will have no problems in getting in there. There is a flight training unit there so they are used to slow planes. St. John’s is another quintal of fish I’d call ahead there. There is still the strip at Harbour Grace, across Conception Bay from St. John’s, Torbay airport. Harbour Grace is a grass strip perched on the side of a hill with a bog at one end and one beaut of a rock at the other end. To make things interesting the prevailing winds will lead you to the bog L. A neat place to practice your short soft field technique.
I hope the moderators here don’t mind my telling you that you might come in contact with a lot more Newfoundland/Canadian pilots through http://groups.yahoo.com/group/canultracom/
As you can see from my signature floats are the best things to have around here.
Keep in touch
