Does anybody know if some one has looked at this engine for the europa. At
42kg for 110hp
and $18000 Australian it would seem like an excellent choice.

Unlikely to be anything near as reliable as the 912 and will burn
substantially more fuel.
In the UK, the PFA as a matter of principle would not approve the use of
2-strokes in the Europa (excepting diesel 2-strokes!).

A friend of mine has installed this 110 hp Hirth on his plane. He has
"blown up" three of the engines, all within 50 hours. Buyer beware.

Craig,
If you're looking for an alternative to the Rotax, check out the UL260i. I
nearly bought one having followed the project from the off. Direct drive and
fuel injection. A friend down the road has one in his Escapade and it runs
very well and quietly, the only problem is prop speed and at 2750 rpm it
only hits 83Hp although this is accurate from dyno reading. Rotax tells us
the 912s is 100Hp but I've never heard of anyone dyno testing one out of the
crate............

All,
Is anyone else considering the Gemini 100 or 125 turbo diesel?

yes also looking at that, but hope to be buying my engine in about 3 months,
so
that limits things some what, still considering converting a GSXR1300 bike
engine
and then de-rating it back to a sensible level. straight out of the box they
are 180hp
with peak torque about the same as the 914 rotax, plus the weight advantage
of about 10kg
over the 914.

Craig...I'm envious of your technical skills which allow you to
consider such an audacious task.
As for the Gemini, below is an email address which you can use to
request email-newsletters:

Good luck,
Fred

I have done some weird engine mods in the past, so i dont see it being a
major hassle
plus having a machine shop (lathe, mill etc) in your garage helps : ) The
hardest bit i can see
is the PSRU, but i have a mate that builds drag bikes and cars and will do
the belt drive reduction (rated to 300hp)
for me on his CNC so it is perfect pitch for the tooth belt.
My dad was a tool maker by trade, and he taught me a LOT as a kid. I have
already made quite a few custom parts for my XS
I guess i am lucky in that respect, if I see a need for a part, i just make
it, rather than having to get it made.
