Good-day,

	In my writhing to complete the wiring for this project, I dimly

recall the need to add a coolant temp sensor and indicator to the stack -

and that someone had volunteered a source for same. I believe  the sensor

lay in one of the coolant lines but not sure where.

	I am begging for info on this topic (as I have for many before it)

and would appreciate any reply.

Ferg,



There is a temperature sensor and fitting that goes in the line between the coolant filler manifold and the radiator.  I purchased mine from Grand Rapids Technologies ( http://www.grtavionics.com/ ).  The temperature sensor is $18.  They don't list the fitting on their accessories page and but it is Part No. H2O-Fit-01 and the cost was $30.00.

Lockwood also has designed a hose tee which they sell with a VDO

temp transducer for about $45. It belongs spliced inbetween the

expansion tank and the radiation, close as reasonably possible to 

the expansion tank

Although I have a 912S, not the 914, I guess there is no difference between 

the two on this particular issue.



I have a hose T and VDO temp. transducer supplied by the UK Rotax dealer 

Skydrive.  Contrary to the Lockwood T that Ira mentions, this is fitted in 

the hose between cylinder No. 3 (aft right side) which normally is the 

hottest one (at least on 912S) and the expansion tank on top of the engine.



The reason for this is that while a common system problem (e.g. with the 

cooling in the radiator or the pump or a leakage) will be detected also by 

measuring the temperature in the expansion tank or in the return hose to the 

radiator, some other reason for overheating of cylinders will not be quickly 

detected by measuring the temperature in the common, mixed coolant coming 

from all the cylinders.



To be on the safe side, one should therefore measure the coolant temperature 

between all the cylinders and the expansion tank.  A practical approach, 

applied by Skydrive, is to measure the coolant temp. only after cyl. 3. 

This corresponds with the philosophy of Rotax for their factory supplied 

engine monitoring, which measures the cylinder head temperature only of cyl. 

no.3, the normally hottest one.



I have connected the temp. sensor to an available input channel in my GRT 

engine monitoring system (excellent piece of equipment).
