I posted this question a while back and got a few very vague responses but no leads I could follow up on. Does anyone know of someone trying to match a RV6/7 canopy to the 601XL fuse?

The planview fuselage width distributions between the two planes, while similar in overall width, have substantial differences in terms of wherer the maximum girth point occurs and also in the direction of taper.

I bought the RV study plans so that I could develop CAD models of both installations and see what the specific sticking points would be but have not done that yet.

I realize that the after fuselage upper frames and skins will be reshaped and raised a couple of inches to execute this change. I called Zenith and they told me that the XL has, if anything, more than adequate directional stability/control and that the increased height and more squared shoulders should not affect the flight behavior in any detectable way.

Any comments? All comments please? Since I am scratch building the bulk of the plane it is not an issue to develop and fabe the adaptation - if it is doable.

Thank you all.

Instead of struggling to adapt the RV canopy why not make a custom one with the characteristics you want? I believe Todd's Canopies builds custom, one-off canopies from your specs for a reasonable price:

Thanks for the suggestion Craig. I spoke with the folks at Todd's and they only blow canopies - no drawn or molded canopies. The primary reason I am considering a different canopy than the original is to get the reduction in useless height in the center and more useful volume at the sides.

Ah, I didn't know the difference. So a blown canopy is basically a soap bubble where you don't have much control over the curve? And in a blown canopy the curve is basically constant while you are looking for a more squat profile?

Let me know what you find out about this. I, too, am interested in a different shaped canopy...." to get the reduction in useless height in the center and more useful volume at the sides." The RV canopy is more to my liking.

precisely. When you look at the Zenith canopy from any angle all you see is a continuous male curve limited by the combination of membrane tension and the shape of the opening it was blown through. Look at the front view of the dragonfly canopy or the RV6/7/9/11 canopy and you will see the differences I described. For me it is worth it as I sit a little taller than some. I really prefer the dragonfly canopy but it is too short and too low to do the job on the XL.

Hey Dave;

I will post what I learn. The big issue is the planview form of the fuselage upper longerons. worst comes to worst, I build a 1/6 or 1/4 size of each upper fuse and see if the shape can be managed. I will still use the canopy hinge locations like the XL and would use the roll over structure bulkhead and fixed rear transparency like the tip up.

Hello Patrick;

I went so far as to model the XL fuselage in CAD as well as the upper longeron, seat pan, forward deck, and roll over structure for the RV9 (same canopy and roll structure as the 6/7).

The major differences:

The fuselage planform tapers from the firewall to the aft end of the cockpit in a straight line and the upper longerons are rather unsubstantial in the XL.

The fuselage on the RV tapers from the firewall to the panel, then is fairly constant from the panel to the aft end of the cockpit where it again tapers into the tailcone.

I wanted to use the RV tip up canopy mounted like the XL, but with the aft roll structure and transparency in the upper fuse and the roll structure in the canopy frame.

This would have required a substantial change to the upper longerons as well as some consideration to the kick loads that develop due to the bend at the panel. The canopy width is compatible with about a 2.5-3" increase in upper longeron spacing at the panel. Since I was planning to use the WW Corvair installation, the plan was to use his nosebowl, measure the tangent between the outer edge of his nosebowl and a 100 inch radius arc at the panel to determine firewall width at the upper longeron. I was planning to widen the spar carry through to keep the fuse cross section similar to the original. I had not yet figured out what I was going to do with framing element between the panel and the lower lobe because I was torn with what I perceived a less that CH elegant TD gear installation concept.

The root end attachment of the wings was going to remain the same at the aft spar and the wider forward carry through would have cost me that amount of span.

All of this was quite doable but my project came to a halt before I went further than some model work and some CAD work.

Hope that gives you some bit of perspective into the task. I was assuming a loss of about 25# of payload Harleysville (SE) PA

I looked into using an RV style canopy, but they are not compatible due to the way
the 601 narrows towards the front. I had Todd at www.toddscanopies.com custom build a
longer and slightly higher canopy for me. It can be viewed on his website. It will install
with the stock hardware, but I designed my own system with rear opening cantilever hinges
so I could have a separate windshield. I'm not flying yet but hope to be this year.

Dave, to what extent can the canopy be changed and still be registered as a 601XL? I'd love to have a Piper Cherokee style canopy, actual hardtop with doors. Or even like the CH2000. The roofline on that basically extends all the way back to the tail instead of a bubble canopy. Otherwise, the fuselage looks a lot like the 601XL.
