It is time for a condition inspection on my Classic 4 already. I want to make my own landing gear bungees this time. It seems like I found the procedure for securing the end loops with either rib lacing cord or safety wire and filed it away where I can't find it now. I think it was in AC43.13-1B. Can someone point me to where it was I saw it? I could be wrong about it being in AC43.13-1B because I sure can't find it there now.

I couldn't find any instructions for making the bungee loops so started experimenting. I tried using safety wire but after about half a day gave that up. It was difficult to pull the wire snug and all my attempts looked like a mess.
I ended up using rib lacing cord. the wrap is about an inch long and each individual wrap is secured with a square knot. So, if one knot lets go or lacing cord gets cut somehow the whole wrap won't come off.
Picture attached any ideas to improve it or other constructive criticism.

The bungees that came with my plane had nico press fittings on the bungees.
Needless to say getting the bulky nico press fittings through the acess
holes in the bottom of the plane is not fun.
When I was a kid my grandfather showed me how to splice rope under and over
and by whipping the ends. Instead of tying a square knot after each winding
he would have used double threads and would have used a half hitch every
third or fourth winding. The result would be a much tighter whipping. When
the job was finished he may have used a lacquer finish on the whipping like
they do on good fly rods. The area of the whipping shouldn't be the area to
stretch.

Deke & Tom, Thanks for the bungee info & pics. Wraping or whipping the ends (on rope not bungees), I have always only had 1 end available. To tie a sq knot along the way as shown, you need 2 ends. Exactly how do you start the wrap? Do you start with the mid point of the wrapping cord instead of one end looped and under the wrap to pull the loose end under the wrap when finished? And then finish with a sq knot. Hope you can follow tying knots in words rather than pictures.

Pat, I was boy scout so I follow knots with words fine. I didn't use the rope whipping method on my bungees because I didn't think I would be able to pull it tight enough. I started by tieing the two ends of about an 18 inch length of cord around the bungee loop tight as I could with a square knot. The two (now about 8 inch ends) were wraped around and tied again and so forth until the ends were too short to hang on to then started with another 18 inch piece. It took about 4 or 5 18 inch lengths of cord to complete each end of the bungee.

Boy Scout Tom, I was a Boy Scout too. I made second class and still remember Mr Hunger reviewing my knots knowledge and test. I don't know why he passed me. Must have been on effort as my knot tying ability wasn't even minimal. I'm alot more knot knowledgable today. Anyway, thanks for the reply I thought if you started with a wrapping cord long enough it would be a hell of an arduous task. Using more than 1 piece to wrap with makes sense and still gives you redundant back up if one section breaks.

The key is redundancy. One long series of wraps tied off at the end is fine, but not good if the string breaks anywhere. Best to have a series of multiple wraps in groups of 5-10, each tied off separately.

Deke, Yup, I now understand how the bungee ends are wraped. Thanks

I have a new (age unknown?) bungee that I would be happy to donate to someone.

I've never made bungees for airplanes...but have used "homemade" bungees for lots of other things. The tieing/whipping works good. I would always stretch the bungee (sometimes it took a ratchet strap with the larger material). I would usually waste a few inches of material because both the short and long end must be secured to something while stretching. When it is stretched the outside diameter is smaller. By tieing/whipping (even multiple applications of safety wire...do a double loop before twisting...) in this configuration made everything MUCH tighter. Personally, I preferred to use the safety wire...however, the pigtail must be bent and tucked into the fold to keep the sharp points protected and out of the way.
