Dear All,
Many thanks for all your help and comments.
The lads at work continue to help me and bail me out on this project!!! I took the frame into work this morning to show some of our guys and apparently we have a hydraulic press that I didn't know about! It's used for pressing wheel bearings into wheel rims etc.
Anyway, I was all for extracting the inserts and starting again but we put the frame into the press and to my amazement the inserts went in. There wasn't that much pressure or effort required (certainly not enough to damage the frame) but just a steady constant pressure straight down the tube which is what I wasn't doing with a hammer in the workshop. I did soak the half inserted inserts in ACF 50 overnight as well.
So, panic over. The inserts are in (they are never coming out again!!!) and I imagine that I've got an almost watertight fit as well although will use the ACF 50 too.
Thanks for your comments and hopefully this may help anyone who hasn't done this mod yet. Another '5 minute' job that has the potential to turn very nasty - especially if the frame is mounted on the aircraft.
Regards,
Phil

Phil, Well done, but for the sake of anyone not having the frame loose or
the availability of the hydraulic press, I would have been tempted to use a
harder bit of wood and a somewhat bigger hammer, and I think you would have
achieved the same result. It is after all designed to be a very tight fit!

Or devise a press with some bits of screwed rod which might well work
