I am curious where you guys have place inspection holes in your wings. I have placed one for access to the plumbing for the pitot tube and another for an OAT probe sensor for my Dynon but can't think of any other reason I need more. These wings don't have any moving linkages that are inside so can anyone tell me why I need any additional inspection holes? What has everyone else done?

Place them pretty much anywhere you might possibly, in the future, need to
get in for access. One is on the belly below the elevator pushrod bearing.
There are also a couple places below the control linkage on the belly below
the baggage area. Any place else you might need future access. You don't
need to actually cut the holes until you need access. Just the
reinforcement rings are all that are needed.

Hi Darin, I know where I would like to have one on my Avid MK IV. Some mice built a nest out near the wingtip, you can feel it when you tap on the bottom. Last summer when I was putting the Jabiru engine in, I saw some mice running up and into the front wing spar. I set traps and cought about half a dozen but I guess they had allready built the house. Just rethinking this, I suppose on the Kitfox you can pull off the wingtips to get at the end of the wing, on the Avid the tip is covered with fabric. I'm going to have to add some inspection rings now after the fact. The other place I need one is so I can reach the top of the tailwheel spring bolt. I guess they say put in a lot of rings and don't cut them out until or if you need to. Jim Chuk Avids Kitfox 4 Mn

Darin,
I would place two each on the bottom of the main wings adjacent to the wing
strut attachment brackets. The reason you would want them there is to be
able to inspect this area for corrosion during annuals or signs of
separation / stressing should you have a mishap. If you have a tailwheel you
will want to consider one for access to the forward bolt on the tail spring.
I also made my wingtips removable to allow for better annual inspections of
the inside of the wings.

The pitot tube is a good place. I would also put one next to the strut
attach brackets on the spars to get a better look at the brackets.

One other thing to consider: During my 'fox's stint with it's previous owner, wasps built nests inside the wing. It would have been good to have and access hole in each rib bay to clean such things out. Maybe overkill, but you can decide.

I have them all over the bottom of the fuse...static ports, pushrod bearing, etc. Its just the wings that I am having a hard time deciding what, if any, additional locations need access holes. I like the spar attachment points to check for corrosion and separation at the lift struts. Maybe I will add an inspection plate at each of the jury strut attachment points also. My wingtips are removable so I have that taken care of. Thanks guys for the advice.

Randy,
You are right that some of these are called out in the building plans, but
over time as people fly and maintain their planes they discover places they
wish they had installed inspection ports for various reasons, call it hind
sight 20/20 if you will, I think this is the input Darin was looking for. In
the end it will still be his decision where to put what.
