Has anyone any ideas as to why these cracks have come about. The bracket bearings are free and the fairing free to move. Only thing none standard, as this is a 79 Tiger, is it is not fitted with brake covers.

I have had the question up on the Gang, but apart form one reply saying never seen before had no other feedback, thought there may be a few more in the business guys looking on here who may have a view.

If this had only been on one of the brackets I would have just put it down to a one off situation, but from the pictures you will see the other side has started in the same place. All comments welcome as I have a new bracket for the one cracked right though, but don't want the same thing to start happening again.

Pictures of the problem can be found at http://ayaforum.org/viewtopic.php?p=414#414

Ian... perhaps vibration caused by 150 mph airflow over the brackets?

Perhaps those flimsy plastic brake covers really do something useful...:^)

Have you checked to ensure the nose weights are present? They dampen vibration I believe.

Ian, I have never seen a cracked bracket like that. Maybe Gil's comment about aerodynamic vibration has some merit, but then I would think you would feel something if it was violent enough to cause that. Most all planes have the brake cover fairings except some of the 2 place models which used an external Lord shock mount on top of the wheel fairing. You can no install the brake cover fairing on these due to the interference. And all the fiberglass fairings I've seen installed have not had the lead weight installed in the nose so I doubt if that would cause it.

Thanks to everyone that replied to this topic. From one of those I think we may have found a possible reason for these cracks.
Check out this link and further pictures. Further comments welcome.

I'm in SLC to pick up my Grumman pontoon boat! I haven't had a chance
to look at the pics, but, I saw one other inboard wheel fairing
cracked and, at the time, I concluded that it was due to the hardware
(it had a home-made spacer that was too big) on top of the remaining
hardware being installed wrong.

Be patient. I'm having prototypes of new wheel pants being made as I
type this.

I never replace the weight either. I've never had a problem not having the weight either.

Following up on the weights issue I knew these fairings had the lead in them but had never checked the balance, silly me. Who ever transferred the hardware over from the old plastic ones did just that, transferred the old weights without re-balancing. They are way too nose heavy now and as Gary says they are coming out. May have been a contributing factor to the bracket cracking.???
