The original builder of my model IV did not use the folding T'deck arrangement. Instead he used the sides and a large single sheet of fairly heavy lexan. I like the idea of doing away with the leaky hinge arrangement but I wonder if there are not some improvements possible on the arrangement I have now.

I'll attach a photo if I can but the setup has the large section attached with only four physical mountings and several feet of velcro. I wonder if a smaller window made of much thinner and lighter lexan and surrounded by aluminum might not prove superior and lighter.

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Dave I did away with the whole turtle deck section and went with one piece of aluminum attached with small screws. It seemed to me to be another source of radiant heat in summer. It works fine too.

I used the LP Aeroplastics domed turtledeck. It utilizes the original
metal framework, but does away with the hinge and the potential water
leakage. I'm sure John McBean sells them, or something similar. The
dome helps strengthens the 'deck and avoids flutter.

Mine was built thin and light and the only detraction is that the thin transparency doesn't remain flat, it tends to sag, which is unaesthetic. There is also a lot of weight in the joints between the plastic and aluminum and amongst the aluminum. You might save weight with all thin lexan, domed or wrinkled for stiffness. I'll see if I can remember to weigh mine.
