Due to circumstances beyond my control I cannot work on my plane today so I started cruising the internet looking for useful info.
One of the most frequent and frustating comments I get from people when discussing my radial rocket "Oh you have a RED engine not a green one? Bet you got it from that guy in Vermont. Didn't you know the red engines are all Romanian Helicopter engines and pieces of crap?"
Now I am on my 2nd George Coy red engine. Neither is a piece of crap and neither appeared to be a bondoed up run out chopper engine. In addition when I queried these M14 experts they all to turn out to never have owned or flown an M14 but heard "somwhere the garbage that they had just repeated.
While researching today I found a website hosted by Darin Bishop, a Pitts 12 enthusiast" who has about 4 posts on these forums.
The following is listed from his website which has a great wealth of other info.
Here's how to tell if you have a Russian, Romanian or helicopter engine:
K(YA): Russian (YA is actually a backwards "R")
RA: Romanian
KE: Helicopter
Serial Number meaning for the Russian engine, example KYA132026:
1st digit: Year example: 2001, 1991, 1981
2nd digit: Quarter of the year
3rd digit: Series of the engine
Last 3 digits: Ordinal, number off the production line
I indeed recieved 2 Russian engines that were not helicopter engines one of which was assembled in 2006 just prior to my purchase. I have been very happy with my GEOSOCO engines and their service.
Darins website is http://www.2wings.com/
Lots of interesting reading there.

Milt,
Glad to see you found my site useful. I can't remember my source for the
engine decoding, it was awhile ago.
Please keep us posted here as your investigation / rebuild continues. While
working on my fuselage I added a mount for mixture control in case the
future includes a switch to fuel injection, so I am interested in learning
from you.
Glad your deadstick came out better than British Airways at LHR did! Your
airplane will fly again.
Darin

I agree with you. The RED engines from Romania are great engines and George
Coy is one of the best dealers in the country for engines and total
knowledge on Russian aircraft and engines.
I have had issues with Russian engines in the past due to sitting too long
and not properly stored for long term storage.
That is the most important over everything.
"How long was it stored and how was it stored, temp, preparation, climate,
and where it was IRAN'ed.
These are the KEYS to a good M-14P engine.

Yak 50, 52, 55M, IAR-823........Great planes.
