Howdy all;

I am confused on the installation of the main gear bungee, and I was hoping you guys could help.
I purchased an older 601 HDS and installed a new engine (Great Plains VW with water cooled heads)
Well the bungee gear was old and sagging, so I ordered new bungee. I replaced the nose bungee, but
just stopped and scratched my head on the main gear bungee.

How do I get to it? It’s all bolted up in the metal gear box and I don’t see how I could get to the bolt
heads to remove the gear box. Am I missing something?
Please email me back if you know the secret to changing main gear bungee cords on a 601 HDS.

Thanks !!!

Hi Roger,
I've a gear page for the 601HDS that probably will help you with
disassembly and replacement
of the main gear bungees. I'd do just one side at at time.
The principal issue is placing a jack-stand at splice plates. Remove the
main wheel, disconnect brake lines
and then unbolt front and rear gearbox bolts. Remove the top gear cap
and bolts on top the wing.
Then slide the whole gear with box and bungee from the angles. Remove
tie-ties and the bungees.

See link www.macsmachine.com/html/gear.htm

Did you search the archives? I see to recall something from Larry McFarland. Also check his web site: www.macsmachine.com.

Larry, Not sure you have not already covered this BUT I am having one BIG job trying to install the nuts on the top bolts that goes through the angles on the wing bottom. Have though about removing the gears and installing nut plates. Cann't see or feel the bolts. How did you do it? Thanks Jerry of Ga.
