FYI,
There is a NEW letter from Chris Heintz regarding aileron flutter posted at www.zenair.org (open to all readers)
I would like to thank Chris Heintz for this letter, as I think it could be of importance to all CH design builders and CH aircraft owners.
Thanks
Jon

Thanks John
Its information like this that helps to prevent problems later down the track.
Thanks also for putting it in the open area free for all to read and not just for the people who have subscribed.
Its good to see Zenith ( Nick) respond openly to builders issues for everyone to learn.
Chris

I'm going to guess this was the problem in the couple of in-flight breakups that occurred. It's possible the XL has more aero-elasticity than the HD or HDS that may make cable tension more critical in the XL, not that you should ever have loose cables, but the XL may be less forgiving with the full 12' wing panels as opposed to the center wing and shorter outer panels of the HD and HDS.
I'm thinking the XL may be more suited to push-pull tubes for controls as well as control surface balancing. Between the two of them, there'd probably never be a problem related to flutter. It's just a high performance plane.

Its not a high performance plane, thats what he is trying to tyell people. Flutter is not a big deal on this plane as the design does not hit a resonance. Keep the cables tight per the plans and you should be fine. If you got a flutter, just slow it down and land and tighten the cables. I don't know where you got that this points the finger at the previous accidents. Scratching my head on that one.

There is no design defect in a plane that is subject to flutter if the cables are not tightened in accordance with standard maintenance procedures C any more than there was a design defect in the DC-10 which lost an engine and crashed because some moron used a forklift to install an engine C thereby cracking the engine mount. If ordinary care in maintenance can prevent an accident C then the design is not flawed.

Certainly more high performance than a c-152. The faster you go, the higher the likelihood of flutter. No design defect, that's just the nature of the beast.
